Tokyo event :-
The whole event was done in Japanese, all presentations, all handouts were in Japanese Only. Clearly targeted at recruiting Japanese people only.
There were approx. 50 students all from top US B-schools, HBS, Wharton, Columbia, Kellogg, Stanford, UCLA, Chicago, Duke, MIT ... off the top of my head
Outside of US B-Schools - Oxford, Cambridge, IESE and HKUST(me and 2 other fellow classmates) were represented.
Definitley not represented surprisingly was INSEAD, although the BCG guy doing the first presentation was an INSEAD Alum.
Everyone there was Japanese (except me), it was easy to distinguish, my name tag was the only one not written in Japanese, and their was noone there who had their names in Katakana (foreign names and word alphabet)
6:30-7:30pm
Presentations from various people in BCG, talking about types of consulting they do, their position and history in Japan, why BCG, type of work they do etcc. and one recent Stanford graduate gave a talk through B-School and his life at BCG in Tokyo. Some fo the strategic intent was to service Japanese companies who were looking at the China and India Bubble.
7:30-8:30pm
Buffet and free networking chat.
Spoke to a few students and BCG consultants.
The key difference in Tokyo is travelling. ALmost all companies that the people in the office consult with are in Tokyo so they very rarely travel, however they are still doing 16 hour days. The Tokyo office hires only Native Japanese speakers, there is a chance of foreigners getting hired but they must have japanese skills competitive with native Japanese.
I spoke about working in Hong Kong/Singapore offices, but no-one had any real experience of those offices.
So for me the event was not that useful, it was clearly focused at recruting and informing about BGC at the local level rather than an global overview.
I probably missed out on quite a lot of detail due to my Japanese skills not being anywhere near native level.
