Thanks Dosa, but yeah I know, so the 23rd is after the 22nd ... so I can come on the 23rd. I am sorry for the mistake earlier, but the Chicago event is actually on the 24th and if I decide to come I would fly to Chicago on the 23rd, attend the event on the 24th and fly to Detroit on the 25th :)... so it works out perfect because it will techically be on my way to Detroit because there is no direct flights from Eastern Europe to Detroit, I would have to fly through NY, DC or Chicago anyways.

And if the event is before 5PM I could even fly to Detroit on the 24th... so that is why I was wondering about the exact time.

Also, if you want to enter the US earlier you can get a tourist visa and than cross the border to Canada for a minute (which is very close to AA) to re-enter with the student status. You could also go through a change of status which is more of a pain than a short trip to Canada :)

Cheers!

I am sure you are aware of this, but in case you do not, you cannot enter US before 22nd July (unless you are participating in the EBS course) :)

Darden2010
So, I will probably go to the Chicago event on July 23rd, is anyone else going?

Hey do you know if McK is doing something similar?

Big-O
It is crazy that BCG is starting to recruit before school starts.

It's not a networking event. It's an event where each local office can get the feel for people who they would think about interviewing and extending offers to before they can at McK.

My recruiter friends at McK were shocked that BCG was doing this early.

I got an email about a somewhat similar event for Bain. Only it's an all-day workshop targeted at African American admits. I agree recruiting before we get to school = CRAZY.

:) I kind of guessed that you knew but just wanted to throw it out there. I am going through the COS process now, so lets see.

It can't be a local recruitment thing, surely? Because there will be a lot of people who live in one part of the world who intend to work in another part but can't make the office they would like to work at because they are still currently working.

I guess, everything now is "a recruitments thing" in a sense. 8-)

oh no, it's recruiting. Step one: learning about the company. This means making contacts, learning more, and showing your commitment.

I signed up for the Bangkok one. The event starts at 6.30 tomorrow (Thursday) but no info about when it ends. There will be a presentation and cocktails so I am guessing around 2 hours.

Cheers!

Sure I will try to write something.

I got the exact time & location end of April and a follow-up, more formal confirmation email just this past Sunday (May 25th). The co-organizer for Bangkok event will attend Wharton this Fall so I reckon this is why I got the info in April. The follow-up email is probably when the mass was informed.

Cheers, :)

As promised, here is some info about the BCG event in Bangkok (from memory).

18.30 – 19.00 Chat with fellow MBA 2010 admits and BCG people

There were ~40 students from virtually every top business schools - HBS, Wharton, SGSB, Kellogg, Haas, Yale SOM, Sloan, Fuqua, Darden. Interestingly though, the students were all Thais (at least the ones I met). I also learned that HBS and SGSB each admitted only 1 Thai student this year while Kellogg admitted > 12!

19.00 – 19.30 Presentation by partner

The partner talked briefly about what strategy consulting is, who BCG is, the hierarchy at BCG (flat) and why work for BCG. The partner really stressed about the last one but hey, I wasn’t complaining since he paid for the food :). After the presentation, the associates, consultants and project leaders in the room talked about an interesting project they have worked on.

19.30 – 19.45 Group sessions

Then the students broke into small groups to hear about consulting in specific industries. More specifically, the industries BCG has expertise in. Each of us only had enough time to attend one group session (the allotted time was only 15 mins). There were four groups– financial services, energy, consumer products and ... I don’t remember the other one :) . I attended the energy one and the consultant leading the group talked about why he likes to work in energy sector.

19.45 – 20.00 Q&A
20.00 – 20.30 More chat with fellow admits and BCG people

The students regrouped for the Q&A and the closing chat was similar to the opening one. So the event took ~2 hours total. Many admits went to a bar afterward and we had a blast! :-D

Tokyo event :-

The whole event was done in Japanese, all presentations, all handouts were in Japanese Only. Clearly targeted at recruiting Japanese people only.

There were approx. 50 students all from top US B-schools, HBS, Wharton, Columbia, Kellogg, Stanford, UCLA, Chicago, Duke, MIT ... off the top of my head
Outside of US B-Schools - Oxford, Cambridge, IESE and HKUST(me and 2 other fellow classmates) were represented.

Definitley not represented surprisingly was INSEAD, although the BCG guy doing the first presentation was an INSEAD Alum.

Everyone there was Japanese (except me), it was easy to distinguish, my name tag was the only one not written in Japanese, and their was noone there who had their names in Katakana (foreign names and word alphabet)

6:30-7:30pm
Presentations from various people in BCG, talking about types of consulting they do, their position and history in Japan, why BCG, type of work they do etcc. and one recent Stanford graduate gave a talk through B-School and his life at BCG in Tokyo. Some fo the strategic intent was to service Japanese companies who were looking at the China and India Bubble.

7:30-8:30pm
Buffet and free networking chat.

Spoke to a few students and BCG consultants.
The key difference in Tokyo is travelling. ALmost all companies that the people in the office consult with are in Tokyo so they very rarely travel, however they are still doing 16 hour days. The Tokyo office hires only Native Japanese speakers, there is a chance of foreigners getting hired but they must have japanese skills competitive with native Japanese.

I spoke about working in Hong Kong/Singapore offices, but no-one had any real experience of those offices.

So for me the event was not that useful, it was clearly focused at recruting and informing about BGC at the local level rather than an global overview.

I probably missed out on quite a lot of detail due to my Japanese skills not being anywhere near native level.

hmm... interesting, why is the Tokyo office so closed to non-native speakers? I thought that a person could work in any BCG office with knowledge of English only, but not Tokyo I guess. :)
Thank you toga for the post!

From what I've heard for the consulting firms you need to be fluent in the native language of the country you want to work in for the most part. It makes sense though otherwise you might have trouble communicating with clients....
