regarding age.well i am 28, will be 28 at matriculation, but guess what? I have 9 years of experience..thats right..i might as well not apply

I think if HBS is trending younger its probably the most stupidest thing...cause i can tell you as the youngest guy in every freaking group i ever worked for..I had to work harder than the rest to prove myself..those young minted HBS mba are in for a lot of social trauma..

Guys,

Anybody here giving a telephonic interview for HBS? how are you guys preparing?

Does anyone have experience with telephonic interviews?

I generally quite like telephonic interviews. At the very least, it allows you to have a good amount of notes in front of you in case you have any questions that stump you. Of course, be wary of actually reading responses and coming off as robotic. I think the main downsides to a telephonic interview are that it can be more difficult to "connect" with the person because of a lack of non-verbal cues, plus the risks of technical difficulties and difficult communication due to accents. One piece of advice I have is to dress at least semi-professionaly during the call. It sounds goofy, but I think you somehow naturally come off as more professional and confident if you're wearing normal clothes, as opposed to talking in your pajamas. Good luck!

Well, I have no prior experience with telephonic, hell i have only given one formal interview in my life yet...

I am more worried about accents.. pre conceived notions regarding personalities develop from accents.

Assuming you're from a fairly typical MBA student location I wouldn't worry too much about stereotypes inferred from your accent. I'm sure the adcoms have spoken to hundreds, if not thousands, of people with a similar accent and would not be naive enough to assume something about your personality based off of it.

BusinessWeek is also reporting that many of the typical gilded resumes (top tier bulge bracket bank => multi-billion dollar PE firm) are not being interviewed this year. This is very unusual.

if this is indeed true, then good for Harvard.

Why do you say that? I don't disagree or agree, I'm just curious what your reasoning is.

I said that because I don't think IB and PE are going to be major hirers of MBAs in the near future (maybe 5-10 yrs). It makes sense for Harvard (or any other b-school) to reduce the number of people they take from this field, many of whom probably said they wanted to return to PE/IB. Other fields such as healthcare and energy are gaining in popularity among b-school graduates, and in order to make room for these folks, HBS is making cuts among PE/IB people.

Just my theory. I have nothing against people in IB/PE (except maybe a slight jealousy at what I can imagine is the size of their bank accounts).
