{2,4,6,8,10,12,14,16,18} = 9

{9} = 1

{11,13,15,17,19} = 5

how do you derive the set {11,12,13,14,15} ?

How many positive integers less than 20 are either a multiple of 2, an odd multiple of 9, or the sum of a positive multiple of 2 and a positive multiple of 9 ?

* 19
* 18
* 17
* 16
* 15

even is 10, less than 20 = 9

multiples of 9 = 20/9 = 2 one odd other is even = 1

total = 10

or

9+2 , 9+4,9+6,9+8,9+10 = 5

total = 5

10+5 = 15

ans E ..15
there are 3 cases..
1) multiple of 2 till 20.. so number = (18-2)/2 + 1=9..
2) odd multiple of 9= 9*1..1
3) sum of a positive multiple of 2 and a positive multiple of 9...only 9*1 is valid as 9*2 + 2=20 and ans <20..
the numbers will be 11,13,15,17,19.... 5
total = 9+1+5=15

Thanks

Some positive multiples of 2: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12....
Some positive multiples of 9: 9, 18, 27, 36, 45....

Some possible sums consisting of a positive multiple of 2 and a positive multiple of 9 include:
9 + 2 = 11
9 + 4 = 13
9 + 6 = 15
9 + 8 = 17
...etc
18 + 2 = 20
18 + 4 = 22
18 + 6 = 24
18 + 8 = 26
...etc

Does that help?

isn't 0 a multiple of 2, since 2*0=0, making the answer D?

Multiple of 2: 0,2,4,6,8,10,12,14,16,18 -10 terms

Odd Multiple of 9: 9 (1 term)

Sum of a positive multiple of 9 and positive multiple of 2:
9,11,13,15,17,19 (5 terms; 9 is repeated from above)

n=16 terms

0 is a multiple of 2, yes but it's not a positive integer. Check the stem: How many positive integers less than 20...

Hi SukhdeepS,

The prompt refers to an "ODD multiple of 9" (NOT) a 'positive' multiple of 9). The number 18 is EVEN, so it would not be included in that group (only the number 9 - which is ODD - fits).

Hi anonymous19,

Since we're dealing with only positive integers that are less than 20, there are only 19 numbers to consider (re: 1 - 19, inclusive).

The first group is all of the multiples of 2 (re: the even numbers): 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18

The second group is the odd multiples of 9 - and there's only one option here: 9

The third group is the SUM of a multiple of 2 (re: 2, 4, 6, etc.) and a multiple of 9 (re: 9, 18). Those would be:
2+9 = 11
4+9 = 13
6+9 = 15
8+9 = 17
10+9 = 19

GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,
