DECS is a necessary evil, its not an interesting or exciting class but it very useful for most people without strong statistics backgrounds.

Looking at the waiver-test, I don't really know how to do the problems off the top of my head; however, I feel like I could relearn that stuff pretty quickly. So I'm going to try to waive DECS 433 using my engineering statistics. If that works out (and I enroll in DECS 434), are there statistics tutorials if I need a review this fall? I may just take 433, but it would be nice to get an extra elective.

I'm in the same boat. Couldn't remember most of the stuff in the waiver test, although I'm sure I could re-learn it. Did you figure out if there are any stats tutorials. I just started the math boot camp and it seems some of the stuff is covered in there.

Since the deadline for submitting waivers is today, can we request a waiver and even if approved take the class? I'm debating whether I should just apply for the waiver today, try relearning the stuff over the next month and a half and if I feel I should still take 433 (or whatever the new class is), then still take it?

Maverick, YellowJacket, and whoever else wants em - PM me your kellogg email addresses and I'll send you some study materials for the DECS 434 waiver exam. Don't have any DECS 433 stuff (since I waived out of that based on coursework).

Just PM'ed you Steel.

Did you at any point feel you shouldn't have waived out of DECS 433? I know I've done all that stuff before, but it was 5-6 years ago and I don't wanna be screwed in some other class since I don't remember the stuff well, but I would like the extra elective. :?

Haven't taken pricing strategies or market research yet (which use stats more heavily) - but given my experience in economics/strategy classes (i.e. Competitive Strategy and Industrial Structure & Strategy and Organizations) where I waived out of ECON as the prereq and then "relearned" the underlying econ as I went - I had no trouble re-picking it back up for the class (typically just referencing old notes while I was doing homework). In all honesty, going through class notes and preparing for the waiver test is about as effective as being super bored during DECS class since you know it already.

Steel, PM sent.

yellowjacket, I found this regarding the stats tutorial:

Quote:
Please note: FINC-430/440 has a pre- or co-requisite of DECS-434. To accommodate students who wish to take FINC-430/440 in the fall quarter but do not have the statistics background covered in DECS-434, the finance department will offer a series of statistics tutorials in conjunction with FINC-430/440. Students who attend the tutorials or who have covered the statistics prerequisites as undergraduates will have a sufficient background to take FINC-430/440. The tutorials, however, are not a replacement for the DECS-434 core requirement.

Also, to answer your other question about taking the class even if approved for a waiver:

Quote:
Please note that earning a waiver does not require you to use it — you may opt for the entry-level course.

That's great to know! Just submitted waivers for Finance and DECS. Guess I'll check out what Steel sends for 434 and decide.

Thanks for that Steel! Got your e-mail.

The only co-requisite you need to be able to know from Stats for Finance I are the following:

1) A basic understanding of what standard deviation and correlation coefficient are
2) Knowledge of how a best fit line works (read basic)
3) Knowledge of what a beta coefficient is (see regression coefficients)

Sure you touch on epsilon and alpha - but that's very quickly. The stats behind it are also touched on in the class with a refresher anyway.

Hahaha. I wish I could take credit - I was on the phone with the office of student life sorting out the mess on insurance when the lady told me. The link I used, fyi: https://www.kellogg.northwestern.edu/welcome/Academics/2ycorecurric/CoreCourseForm.aspx

It was up last night, but also not working. However, it is working now. One question, Isa, what did you learn about insurance? Anything worth sharing?

I had a ridiculous snafu with COBRA/last employer and am currently uninsured, so was trying to see if I could get NU insurance before finding a plan from esurance. The only noteworthy thing I learned is that the earliest you can get NU insurance coverage is the day before KWEST. Otherwise, they confirmed the prices listed on the website - it is in fact a lot more $$ than using an option from something like a local Blue Cross. Their plan is far more comprehensive but I don't think I need that.

I was also trying to understand how Student Health Services works if I don't have NU insurance (am I allowed to use it? Is it still free? Do I have to pay something?). They said I needed to call back after 9:30cst when their student health rep was available. (fun!)

The link still didnt work for me. Then I tried:
https://www.kellogg.northwestern.edu/wel ... eForm.aspx

This worked by the way.

I see FINC 430, FINC 440, MECN 430 and MKTG 430 and I have to choose one.
Is that what everyone else is seeing too or is it different for us MMMs.

Just curious!

Those are the choices for anyone. Also, if you waive enough classes (typically DECS433) then the second elective is usually picked up in Add/Drop.

Turbo Fin is definitely one of those courses that everyone complains about during the experience but then is typically glad they did afterward.

To Turbo or not to Turbo. That is the question. Maybe I should close my eyes and click.
