Disclaimer: This comment isn't an LBS bash; in fact, after the info session, I'm very sold on LBS, and I wish I had done the app in an earlier round.

I'm a R2 applicant, and as I'm working through the essays, I wonder what the questions say about the school and how our answers help Adcom determine fit.

While the questions on contribution to team and community obviously speak of what LBS values, I'm not sure that asking these questions directly provide Adcom the best means of gauging our values and our ability to contribute to these things.

Two questions on future direction (as opposed to questions on past accomplishment).
One on leadership and application, which is OK.
One on future ECs, which is open-ended and an opportunity to dove-tail in other material, albeit in a oblique fashion.

Not sure what other applicants think of the essays, but this emphasis on future and less of past has a lot running in the hypothetical space.

Thoughts?

eowyn from your post we can see that you are a good writer and that your essays are probably top notch. Try to make the interview a conversation. LBS tries to find folks with similar backgrounds / interests to interview you. So if you're lucky, you might find someone who has work experience at CNBC or Disney and you will have lots to speak about with that person. The presentation is all about you being able to structure your thoughts clearly under pressure. Dont stress about that either - the topics are fairly generic from what I have heard. These interviews are just a glorified "sanity check" or "alumni tick" and just another part of the application and, like the GMAT, a good interview wont get you in, but a poor one will definitely keep you out.

The waitlists suck, they really do. But at least an LBS waitlist makes it much easier to get in the next year, without having to reapply with all the essays. The important thing to note is that if you do get waitlisted, it will be your interviewer who will help you get over the line (when they revisit your application, they will probably ask your interviewer about his impressions again).

ps. you will LOVE LBS. I had applied to several US schools as you probably already know. I visited many US schools at campus, but I think LBS is the best fit for me.The facilities / campus are not the best, but the student body and the opportunities here are simply incredible

I have a question about the word limit for LBS essays. Maybe people who are current students or people who have been invited to interview maybe able to give me their insights. None of my essays are more that 25 words over. For the first essay which is of 600 words, can I exceed by 20 words or better to keep it within 10 words extra.
Essentially what I am asking is, can I exceed by 3-4% in general although I am trying to keep it less than that.

Hi Ari123,
you definitely can take that much leeway. My first essay was 620. Rest were 5-15 words higher and one was under the limit too.

As long as you are not consistently exceeding the limits more than 5%, I dont see any problem.

Good question, jasonjason. The unwritten rule here is that you should be using your past experiences to justify the ideas you write about in your essays.

For example, on the first essay question, you should be writing about how your past and present experiences influenced you to decide on the career direction you want to take post-MBA. Similarly, your proposed future ECs should be a logical extension of the types of ECs you were involved with in the past and present.

The adcom will definitely evaluate your story in each essay to see if it is feasible, given your past. Even if you are a career-changer, the motivations behind your switch and the pathway you will take to accomplish it will need to be clear. And if you were not involved in any ECs in undergrad, but your essay mentions that you want to start a new club, be president of an existing club and do many other things while at LBS, they are not going to be convinced of your drive to make it happen.

You should be fine - 10% over on essays is generally considered to be the absolute upper limit.

You say lbs facility/campus is not the best ...why so? why do thnk it is not best ?
i thought lbs has one of the best campus

The campus itself is good (especially based on input from MBA2010s studying on exchange), but space is quickly becoming an issue. As LBS is located right in the heart of London, there is very little room to expand or purchase new buildings or land (which would likely cost hundreds of millions of pounds). As a result, we don't have the sprawling campuses or shiny new buildings like some of the American MBAs, plus we don't have an undergrad program to share development costs for facilities improvement.

Because of this, we do not have a central auditorium that can seat the entire MBA class (and usually have to rent external space), and with multiple degree programs, spaces in the computer lab or study space can be hard to come by.

This is an area LBS is addressing by moving non-essential and back-office space to offsite locations. And if I remember correctly, some classes are delivered at the RCOG, a college campus next-door to LBS.

I have a question regarding using British or American English for LBS essays.Should I submit my essays in British English(with spelling differences like colour, programme etc) or I can submit in American English. I am comfortable with American English and would have difficulty formatting the essay in British essay. It would be great if anyone for US could tell me how they submitted their essays. Please note that I am not a native American.

I have gone through the entire LBS thread today and really thankful for all the info. I am
-Indian/Female/GMAT 660/Engineer, 27 years old.
-4 years of WE in IT industry and
-Worked in UK at client location for almost 2 years and now live in France and learning French language here.
-I am not employed currently as i had to quit my job in June this year to join my husband here in France.

I would be grateful if bsd or prashok or any others can help me with a profile evaluation for LBS. I have a good experience of leading small teams and working in a multi-cultural environment. Even right now, all my classmates are from different countries. I have mostly been passionate about education so my few extra curricular activities have been only in that area.

Working on Question 1 now. While the parts are specifically easy to answer, my question is whether my essay has to be formatted according to the sequence in which the questions are asked, or whether as long as I get all the required bits in, it would be OK.

i.e. Instead of What next, Why LBS, Why now, I'd like to address it in reverse order, for example, why now, why LBS and then what next. Any thoughts?

And a bit of buzz from campus -- last week the Ruler of Dubai, HRH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, visited the school and endowed a new chair with the support of the administration. I had classes in the lecture theatre next to the official reception, so I only caught a glimpse beyond the heavy security entourage and London police presence. I did check out the sweet motorcade of cars sitting in the school's carpark though... 8-)

I had my interview two weeks ago. It went extremely well, and the interviewer had a profile basically equal to mine. Top uni, top consulting firm and got into LBS with 2 years of we.

He asked some specific questions that were clearly requested by the adcom. They were centered on motivation for my MBA, flexibility in my career choice since it is hard to achieve exactly what one wants and how I will cope with guys having much more experience than I do.

Now I just have to wait the 16th of December, hoping that my 2 years of experience by commencing date won't be a problem!!

Hey buddy apologies - but due to exam / workload I wont be putting out any detailed replies / posts for at least a week or two.

For my GMAT info you can look up my debriefs in either the members section or in the GMAT experience section. I think in general it is a good idea to check whether the same information is posted in the past before raising questions.

Hi jsonali -- it's a bit tougher to evaluate the IT/Indian demographic, given its competitiveness. From what we know of the current students with the same background/nationality, they all had significant international experience, so that is a plus on your profile. Some of them were entrepreneurs as well.

The GMAT score could be an issue, given our class average (and if you are below the mean, LBS will want to see something else in your profile, such as nontraditional work experience). So I would try to work on that.

I would spend significant time on your essays as well, as this will be the opportunity to differentiate yourself against the many other applicants with similar backgrounds. The gap in your work experience at the moment could also raise questions, but if you are studying French, you should also make sure to write about this.
