For admitted students who plan to matriculate, or those who plan to matriculate if admitted, I have a big question: Why Ross? No, seriously, I don't want the answer you gave in your essay or interview. Truly and honestly, why are you planning on attending Ross over other schools? I'd love to hear opinions. PM me if you don't want to put the answer here. Thanks!
I did visit, and the reason I'm asking is that I didn't... love it. The class I observed was relatively dull and the students seemed uninvolved, everyone was "nice" but no one was particularly forthcoming, and I just really didn't feel like they wanted me there the way I've felt at other schools. Maybe it was a bad day, who knows?
I actually had a similar experience which is part of the reason I was leaning towards Duke. In one class I was in at least two people arrived late and there were people talking during class while the professor was lecturing. I also got a very "young" feel from one group of students I interacted with. On the other hand there were some other students that I thought were very put together and what I'd expect at an MBA program. I came away feeling like I didn't know what I'd end up with. I attended two classes, one kind of turned me off, the other was better but still a little disengaged.
Sorry to hear your visit was less than stellar. I can comment on this. If you visited a first-year core class, I'd say this term's classes are the most technical (ie, non-strategic) and for me, not as interesting as all the other classes I've had through now. Operations and cost accounting involves a lot of math and aren't super strategic. And as a result, not a lot of discussion in class. Though I'd say our Operations class does have a bit of discussion. Valuations is cool though. Not a lot of discussion, but my prof is great.
It's also internship recruiting, so the first-year classes are half-full with lots of people totally fried from interviewing and prepping for interviews. As a result, students are deprioritizing classwork, which could also explain why class may have been dull.
If you do plan to visit, try to contact a current student and find out the best classes to sit in on. Internship recruiting will be dying down soon, so hopefully students will be more excited to chat. I'd stay that Rossers tend to be laid back, so perhaps you spoke to strung-out students. If they're sitting alone in the Winter Garden, they're probably busy since WG is full of people meeting up and chatting. Try to find a group of students who don't have their laptops open or are reading something.
Oh, if you visit this Friday or Saturday, try to get a ticket to Follies. It's an annual show that makes fun of anything Ross. Guaranteed to be a great time.
