I don't understand the Wharton thing. More buzzwords? More stats, micro? More international, more social impact? More electives? More free exec ed? Is there less of anything?

less required lock-step first year courses, which is now the entire HBS curriculum, at a school where first year kids are known as RC's (Required Curric) and second years known as EC's (Elective Curic). --and sets HBS up for being odd man out.

Doesn't seem like HBS will change that as it will fundamentally change the section experience and a key aspect of collaboration they actually have at HBS (more experienced ppl in a field helping the less experienced).

However, I do think that the HBS curriculum will change within the next 1-3 years. Dean Nohria has a very strong philosophy on leadership and ethics; I believe this will translate to a fundamental change in how these two aspects of b-school are emebedded in the curriculum and taught at HBS.

haha, I agree, that HBS first year lock-step "RC" is Rock Of Gibralter for now, and deeply embedded in the school's case method mythos abot learning leadership from diverse views, blah, blah, but even rocks can be chipped away at.

One of these days, when I get around to it, I will publish Nohria's 'stump speech' e.g. what he saying to small groups of faculty, alums, students, blah, blah gleaned fr. reports back to me, and what it really means. He is setting the table, in a slow-moving and shrewd way, for initiating case method changes 2nd year, and changing, in small but impt ways, the "demo" of the class to make it more female, international, and PC. HRH already on the case.

HRH on the case: does this mean your chances are better now (vs before) if you're female, international, and 'PC' (however you define that!)?

PROBABLY -but I'm not Julian Assange, just working w. collected semi public info.

Thanks guys. One more question: should I explain my mediocre grades in one out of four essays or briefly explaining it in "additional information" section will suffice? Thanks

Either way should be fine. If you can briefly explain it convincingly, the additional info part should suffice. But if you are planning to write the "undergrad experience" essay anyway, then I think you should incorporate your reasons into it (while not making the whole essay only about this point.)

Personally, I've taken the second option...and now praying it's the right choice :)

Question about career placement at HBS. I am interested in marketing/management positions. What percentage of HBS grads move to NYC to work in this field post graduation? How hard will it be for me to do job search in NYC while in Boston?

Thanks.

a chunk of placements happen in NYC.. and as long as you are in HBS getting a "marketing/management" job in NYC should not be a prob...

btw Kellogs has started sending out r1 decisions...

Wall St. hiring up at #HBS, Wharton, Columbia, NYU says Wall St J. blog w. impressive stats in support. https://is.gd/ipzyM
Quote:
Wharton recorded a 20% increase in the number of students offered summer banking internships from 2009 to 2010.
New York University's Stern School of business, which places about one-third of its students at investment banks, hosted 10% more bank recruiting events this fall for full-time positions and summer internships.
Columbia Business School, which places almost half of its graduates in financial services, also has welcomed more recruiters this fall and recorded a 45% increase in full-time job postings,
Harvard Business School is also expecting a flurry of offer letters for MBA candidates approaching graduation, though it is also a few weeks away from tallying the total of full-time jobs, according to Jonathan Shepherd, associate director of MBA career & professional development.
"Things feel very good -- certainly better than they have for the past couple years," he said.

Don't worry, I did the same (over analyze) and so did other people I spoke with. They are actually less than a week away. I'm starting to lose my mind!!!!

johndoe2010
Interview a few weeks ago.

Thought it went well at the time. Now I've started to over analyze the whole thing, e.g. maybe I should have positioned my career vision answer more towards A instead of B to emphasize...
Anyway, thought I would keep this thread alive as well as state that it's darn near impossible to stay focused on current work when decisions are a week away... Good luck all

By the way, I'm surprised how quiet Dee's blog has been. Would've thought that she would at least make one quick post by now just confirming the plan to release decisions and roughly the time... Guess she's said it so many times she thinks we will just check last year's?

Filling out HBS application is like writing a bunch of additional essays. Asking me where I went to high school is a little ridiculous...

It might seem ridiculous but don't take it lightly - During my HBS interview, I was actually asked about what my friends in the two high schools I went to would say about me - I'm currently in my mid-to-late twenties btw
