Some important pointers for r2 applicants (from the admission chat)

Font size:
- I wouldn't advise smaller than 12.

(Though when I asked a recommended font size, they mentioned that it should be legible)

Cover letter:
- We prefer the cover letter to be one page, and legible.
- The 500-word limit is only for the main body of text. If it goes over 500 words, the rest will not be read.

Word limit:
- No one is going to sit there and count the words; however, if it's clearly long or over a page, the 2nd page may not be read. It's up to the reader.

Essays:
- It is very important you stick to the last 3 years. You may talk about older experiences in your cover letter, or in the optional essay. You may address older experiences in the cover letter, just not in the essays

Thanks King Shark! Although reading through only 20% of it made me appreciate all those who previously posted excerpts of useful information. God, there were so many..."weird" questions.

Agreed!! Some people ask the WEIRDEST things! And posting your profile and asking if you'd be admitted is just absurd. I wonder if they can see the real names behind these screen names....if so, I feel bad for those people with the outrageous questions. I've been a lurker at most of the chats this year, and I can say this one was probably the weirdest/least helpful.

I completely agree. For applicants who have done at least some research, this was so basic and not that helpful.

That was an entertaining session. WHY are MIT applicants asking questions on a chat that could be answered with a 5 second Google search?

Hi, I’d like to quit my job and prepare TOEFL and GMAT. Both of my score is poor, but I have a passion to go to MIT. I don’t want to apply another school. So, is it possible? Thank you.

For those wondering:

R1 invites are still going out. This is in the chat log (many thanks to KingShark for posting as I was hoping to attend but got tied up with work).

I've attached an excel spreadsheet of the chat and filtered just on the moderator comments. Makes it a little easier to get the actual value out the session. There are 2 tabs - one for each room.

A couple of notes though:
- My browser crashed half way through so I missed about 10-15 mins of chat
- All the formatting didn't quite come out right - I tried to fix it up as best as I could

I get the sense that most domestic interview invites have been sent. Additional invites will now be more a function of interview performance (or non-performance) of those who are being interviewed, as well as MIT yield

I would like to agree on your comment...

MIT also has about 10 days of buffer time to review some of the R2 apps before they send out decisions/dings/invites etc before the last week of January

During the chat, one of the moderators mentioned that about half the interviews in Cambridge would take place in December, half in January. I don't know how that would translate to when the invites themselves would be sent out, but if I were in R1 I wouldn't give up hope just yet.

They also said based on how current interviews go, they would make decisions on additional invites. I wouldn't say it's over yet.

interesting.... from the chat

We will be sending most interview invitations in the next three weeks, and most candidates who will not be interviewed will hear from us in that timeframe as well. Thanks.

i think he meant to say that the remainder of invites will be coming in the next three weeks, so if you haven't heard by january week 2, then know that your chances are low. people bombard them with questions and in typing quickly sometimes they make an error (i emailed one of them once after because their data didn't match the profile and they wrote back and said they made an error and apologized).

it wouldn't make sense that the majority of invites have yet to go out when they've scheduled hundreds of interviews already it seems.
