My approach to the cover letter:
Intro - Why Do I fit at MIT Sloan? I addressed my campus visit, students I met and got to know, sense of community, innovation, energy, C-functions
Why Do I want to learn at MIT? Focus on deep, broad skills with spirit of mind and hand -> actually going out and putting ideas into practice to improve society, the G-Lab where one can use skills to assist businesses in emerging markets, Leadership development program, flexibility in exploring multiple career paths
WHat motivates me and how does this relate to what I can learn and contribute to Sloan? I explained I am motivated to become a better leader due to my combat experiences leading Soldiers against an determined enemy and protecting innocent civilians. I mentioned working to get towns up and running through micro-grant, government coordination, etc.
I said I can use the leadership, cross-cultural teamwork, and problem-solving skills I gained in combat to overcome adversity and plan through tough challenges during team projects etc. I said while I am not the smartest person, I have a huge reservoir of practical experience to draw from that would benefit my classmates.
I went into detail on these three things (leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving) and used those to structure my letter.
Briefly tie values / impact on organization? I explained all the previous paragraphs in terms of my key values (similar to army values of integrity, responsibility, team work, loyalty, selfless-service, being there when people need you no matter what the situation whether it is a personal problem or you are taking massive machine gun fire or got hit with a suicide bomber etc. I explaind my impact on the Army over the past 5 years and what is has meant to me, where I want to go in life, and how MIT can help me get there.
I concluded with the respectful type ending "Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you this winter."
Not sure if this will help anyone and if you think I am way off, might make you feel better about your chances for an admit.
Round 1 is almost here, im retaking GMAT in two weeks and finishing essays, damn this is rough haha
Good luck everyone.
