Hi, I would guess 185 hours by the first test. I took my second test about three weeks after, and studied about 15 hours in that time. I was actually thinking about rescheduling since I didn't have much time to study in between but all 15 hours were spent on Quant so I felt it was enough to boost the score and fortunately it was!

I used the official practice tests and questions but not the guides. The questions were obviously good but you couldn't structure your studying as precisely and the answers could be a bit confusing for me at times, so I preferred TTP!

yc168
Hi, thank you very much for sharing.

If you don't mind, can you also share how much time you spent studying prior to your first test? How about between your first and second test?

Did you use any Official Guide practice materials?

Thanks in advance.

finbe
If I were to give any advice it would be to keep going through the doubt. This can be a long process and there will be times when you might question if all the studying will be worth it, but it will be. Every single point you get on the test matters, so you will never be upset with working until you achieve the best score you can.

Hi finbe,

Wow, 715! What a score! You should be super proud of your accomplishment! I'm so happy to see how much the TTP course helped you achieve your score goal. Good luck with things moving forward.

I would guess about 200 hours. Most of it was spent on the Quant section.

Wanted to share my experience using Target Test Prep in preparation for the GMAT in the end of 2024. I work for a consulting firm that requires heavy hours, so I knew I'd have to be pretty selective about how I spent my free time studying (I mostly studied on flights twice a week and for 2-3 hours most Saturdays). I was recommended TTP by a friend who swore by it, but the price tag initially scared me off. After thinking about it, I decided it was worth paying up for a top-tier program and purchased the six month course.

I was initially taken aback by the sheer volume of practice materials available and it took me a few days to figure out how to use everything. Once I got in a rhythm of working through the lessons and practice tests, I realized I probably only had to focus on the quantitative materials. The ability to cherry pick the lessons and topics over the course of six months was essential for me. I didn't have much time to practice things I was already good at and knew I had to really 80/20 my preparation.

My six months ran out and I still didn't feel ready, so I bought an extra month of quantitative practice and really doubled down. After seven months, I took the test and got a 705 and didn't feel like I'd performed my best (I had to take the test at 6am and was a bit groggy). This was satisfactory for what I needed so I never retook it.

Based on my experience, I actually felt like I spent more time than I needed to. I felt overprepared for the test as I was taking it, for which TTP deserves a lot of credit. Their gauge of which questions were "easy", "medium", and "hard" was generally accurate and I appreciated that I was able to increase my knowledge over time by starting with the easy questions and move on to the tougher ones as I got close. I will say, their program might leave a little to be desired in the calibration department. Although feeling overprepared is a great feeling, I wish I would have known during the program that I was probably ahead of where I needed to be. I also think a more thorough diagnostic at the beginning of the program would have helped me better prepare for the actual test experience.

All things considered, this is a great program for someone that wants to take the GMAT seriously. Definitely spend some time figuring out what you want to improve on so that you can tailor the program to your needs (ideally you've already taken the GMAT and can plan accordingly).

1 - Yes
2 - Difficulty 655+, did not filter by question type, but would do so retrospectively.
3 - I timed my sessions instead of counting questions - 10-15 questions/hour would be about right (including solution review).
yc168
Hi Mort1x,

If you don't mind, I have a couple follow-up questions about your practice strategy for CR, like:
- Did you also use Forum Quiz to practice LSAT LR questions?
- How did you structure your quiz? By difficulty, by CR question type, or other?
- How many questions did you do in one quiz session?

Basically something similar to what you described previously about how you practiced LSAT RC passages, but for CR.

Thanks in advance.

Congrats on your 705!

Your dedication despite a demanding job is truly commendable. It’s great to hear how you made use of TTP. Sometimes knowing when to stop is as important as knowing what to study. You put in the hard work, and it paid off! Wishing you success in your next steps.

Hi finbe,

Thanks very much for your response. I must say your score improvement in Quant from 80 to 86 is impressive, as well as the improvement in DI that's likely correlated with Quant.

I also noticed your lawyer background, so I guess your Verbal must have been strong, given your LSAT Prep. Any tip for DI? Did you find your LSAT Prep, in particular in Logic Games, any helpful with the DI section?

Congratulations again for the great score!

Congrats, Shivam!

Also, that's really interesting about some schools' emphasis on GMAT scores. It's true that, in multiple ways, a GMAT score can be a better indicator than other aspects of an application.

Thank you MartyMurray 😊 😊

2 years back when I scored 500 on classic GMAT, I thought of leaving this MBA field and now going to a top B school - time changes :)
Yes, indeed, times change. Great to see.

There are limited resources out there that explicitly cover the GMAT Focus edition. I have used mainly books to study for standardized tests in the past but could find no updated references. This is where a friend, who had just been accepted into Wharton, came in.
He shared with me his experience with Target Test Prep and how it was extremely helpful given the difficult balance between family, work, and GMAT studying.
I decided to try it myself and found the same for myself. Though I work in a technical field, I had not dealt with this “style” of math in a while and found myself falling short of the mark. Target test prep enabled me to drastically improve my score in this section while also being a perfect tool for someone who is constantly being interrupted by work and life. Though my time was limited, I was able to double my quant score’s percentile from 33% to 66%. While this alone does not help my competitiveness at the M7 schools, this improvement allowed me to propel my composite score extremely high with my performance in the other two sections.
I also found the data and verbal sections in the target test prep to be extremely valuable in taking the last few steps towards excellence in the sections. I was especially able to dial in the score of the verbal section to perfection and nearly achieved the same in the data analytics.
Following TTP I was able to not only get a perfect score on the verbal section but achieved a 695 (98%) overall and have recommended the program to multiple coworkers who are interested in pursuing their MBA. Thanks!

Congratulations on your incredible GMAT improvement! Doubling quant percentile is no ordinary feat and achieving a perfect verbal score is truly impressive. Your dedication despite a busy schedule is inspiring. Wishing you the best of luck with your M7 applications—your hard work will surely pay off. You’ve got this!

Wow, a perfect verbal score is incredible! I'm so glad to hear that TTP was instrumental in helping you achieve verbal perfection on your way to a fantastic 695 overall.

Huge congrats, and wishing you all the best with everything ahead!

Hello everyone,

To be clear, I used Target Test Prep for my 2nd attempt in GMAT when I got 575 and for my 3rd attempt at GMAT (665 with Q 90), I didn't use Target Test Prep, in fact I took private tutoring sessions from MartyMurray

Hello everyone, I am very excited to share that I scored a 715 (Q88 V85 DI83) on my official GMAT earlier this month!

Exam 1 Preparation (1/1-2/12) --> 655 official score

My GMAT preparation began at the start of 2025 in the form of the Princeton Review GMAT Focus Premium Prep guidebook. This was an affordable preparation option at just $29.99 and I was able to work through all 600 pages in about 3 weeks. I also just graduated from college in December, so I was fortunate to be able to give GMAT preparation my full attention. While I found this book to be great for gaining familiarity with the GMAT and its different sections, the hardcover format was not ideal given that this is a computer adaptive test. The book does come with some free online practice exams, and I scored (665, 605, 635) on those to establish my baseline. With about 3 weeks left until my first official attempt in mid-February, I continued to redo the PR exams and also attempted the mba com practice exams, eventually driving my practice exam average to around 675-685. To summarize, heading into my first real GMAT attempt my preparation was very practice exam heavy with a mostly basic understanding of the material in each section. My first GMAT attempt did not go how I was hoping, every question felt difficult, and I could feel the test day pressure impacting me negatively and I scored a 655 (Q83 V84 DI 80).

Exam 2 Preparation (2/15-3/6) --> 715 official score

Following my disappointing first attempt at the GMAT, I decided to make a strategic change in how I was approaching my GMAT preparation. Instead of hedging my bets and using practice exams to raise my proficiency in each section equally, I decided to go all in on the quantitative section. My background is in engineering, and I have always been strong in math, so I decided this was the section I would be most likely to master. I decided to go with a professional option this time around with my preparation and purchased one month of access to Target Test Prep. In the 3 weeks I had to prepare, I consistently put in 6–8-hour days of work into the TTP quant review course for a cumulative 110 hours of dedicated quant preparation. I was scoring above 90% on easy and medium difficulty questions, and around 75-80% on hard questions. I took one mba com mock exam the day before my exam and scored an ironic 715 (Q83 V88 DI 85) with 99th percentile scores in the two sections I did not practice in the weeks leading up to the exam. However, on test day, it was the quantitative preparation that I was able to rely on for a 715 (Q88 V85 DI83) that I was thrilled with walking out of the exam room.

I hope my experience is useful to everyone doing their best to prepare for the GMAT! Happy to answer any more specific questions regarding test day or my preparation!

Mock Exam and Official Exam Timeline

See below my detailed practice exam timeline and mock exam data! I found the high quant scores I was achieving on the PR mocks gave me a false sense of security when I pivoted to the mba com mock exams. I found these quant questions to be much more difficult and the algorithm a lot more punishing! The mba com mocks exposed my quant weaknesses that I was not able to shore up until after my first real exam through the completion of the TTP quant review. Overall, I am happy with how I was able to steadily improve throughout my two months of preparation!
