Hi erlandgas,
This is a very valid question that a lot of MBA applicants have asked and the final decision is very subjective. It won’t change the decision on your profile completely but it can definitely tilt the scale in your favor.
If you really cannot afford the cost, then don’t opt for the interview. Obviously, the adcoms at won’t want you to go into debt just come over for an interview. However, it is quite important to the school.
To give you some perspective, the school adcoms don’t really know you very well. All they know is a person whose stats are in a file but they have no personality to add to the face. And they really need to. Tuck is a small school with a lot of collaborative projects and a collaborative environment. Thus, the cultural fit of a prospective student matters a lot to them. This is why they encourage students to make the trip to visit the campus, take classes and give their interviews.
If you can’t spare the significant sum of $700 (maybe even more), you can schedule a Skype interview with the school adcoms. But you’ll have to be quick to do so as the slots are limited and students jump to the opportunity of booking skype interviews.
However, I feel I should share with you that a Tuck admissions committee member had once told a publisher that students from across the globe visit Tuck to get a shot at the optional personal interviews. Which makes students from the US seem not significantly passionate towards the school when they select not to visit despite being in the same country.
