Two siblings Mark and Steve start from the same point and walk in the same direction at speeds of 5 kilometres per hour and 10 kilometres per hour respectively. After walking for an hour, Mark turns around and walks back along the same path to the starting point. Mark rests for half an hour at the starting point, and then hires a taxi driving at 30 kilometres per hour to catch up with Steve. If the taxi charges $10 for the first 2 kilometres and $2 for every subsequent 500 metres, how much in dollars does Mark pay for the taxi ride?

So mark travels for 2.5hr to reach at the start point= 1+1+.5

In this 2.5hrs S travel for 25kms

Let say they meet after t time
= x/30= (x-25)/ 10

x= 37.5

Total amount= 10+140+2= 152

Mark takes 1hr (onward) + 1 hr (return) + 0.5 hrs (waiting time) = 2.5hrs

By this time, Steve covers 25kms

Distance between M & S is 25kms now. The relative speed is 20km/h.

So, T = D / S = 25/20 = 5/4 hrs. THis is the time M takes to reach S. In this time, he has covered 5/4 * 30 = 37.5 kms

For 37.5 kms, he spends $10 (1st 2 kms) + $142 (remaining kms) = $150

mark travel for 2.5 hrs
by 2.5 hrs streve goes = 10*2.5 km = 25 km
now, mark start to catch up steve
so their relative speed =(30-10) km/hr = 20 km /hr
total time taken to cover 25 km
= 25/ 20 hr = 1.25 hrs
mark in 1.25 hrs cover = 30* 1.25 km = 37.5 km
so taxi charges = 10 + 35*2*2+2 = 152

distance covered by steve in total time 60+60+30 ; 150 mins
150*10/60 ; 25 kms
relative speed of mark in cab + steve ; 30-10 ; 20 kmph
and time taken that they meet ; 25/20 ; 5/4 hrs
so total distance covered by Mark in cab ; 30*5/4 ; 37.5 kms
total cost ; 10+2+(4*35) = 152 $
