Velocity = Distance/ time
=> Distance = Velocity * Time

Distance traveled in 1st hour (D1)= 40 * 1

Let "t" be the time (in hours) for the rest of the journey in which Tyrone traveled 50miles/hr

Then distance Travelled with 50mile/hr (D2) = 50 * t

Given total distance = 160
D1+ D2 = 160
40 + 50t = 160
t=3.4hours
=3hours 24min

Tyrone started at 7:30, so he reaches the destination at 10:54

Answer is B


PS: Remember we can always add individual distances to get the total distance. And individual event time to get the total time. But velocity can't be added in this fashion

Tyrone began the drive from Billington to Camville at 7:30. He drove at a constant speed of 40 miles per hour for the first hour and 50 miles per hour aer that. If the distance from Billington to Camville is 160 miles, at what time did Tyrone arrive in Camville?

(A) 10:30
(B) 10:54
(C) 11:00
(D) 11:06
(E) 11:12
Solution:

After the first hour and 40 miles driven, Tyrone has 160 - 40 = 120 miles left for the journey. Since he’s driving at 50 mph after the first hour, it will take another 120/50 = 12/5 = 2⅖ hours to reach Camville. Therefore, he drives a total of 1 + 2⅖ = 3⅖ hours or 3 hours and 24 minutes for the journey. Since he began driving at 7:30, he reached the destination at 7:30 + 3:24 = 10:54.

Answer: B

At 8:30 there are 120 miles left to drive. The remaining distance will be driven at 50 mph, so it will take more than 2 hours, but less than 2.5 hours. Therefore the arrival time must be between 10:30 and 11:00.
