OKAY! So you were eagerly waiting for that phone call and instead you got an annoying update on the school admission portal that you have been waitlisted.
I know how that feels. I have been there and I have lived through that. So I wanted to lay out five things that you can do to actually feel better and get started on the next steps. Time is of the essence, and I want you to get back on your feet (of course after an obligatory day off with carbs/fat/beer/soda)
1. Thank the schoolThe key here is to not pitch yourself to the school all over again in a lengthy email or an elaborate phone call (they just got done calling hundreds of people and they would not appreciate it). Instead just thank them for considering you, ask for feedback and reiterate your interest. That's about it. Schools will release waitlist directions very soon. Follow it loosely, meaning follow it to the T but don't be afraid to go a little extra. Let me know if you want examples!
2. Create a plan of actionImproving your waitlist will include (but not limited to): Improving your test scores, improving your quant performance, showing your business acumen, reaching out to the schools, getting a new recommender, getting promoted, achieving a very significant accomplishment and the likes. Of course, you don't have to do all of them, but 2-3 of them will be necessary.
3. Pace out your updatesDon't flood the school with an update each week (or month even). Send them an update in 4-6 weeks (earlier for urgent and very important ones like a promotion, an improved test score etc.). Otherwise do a bunch of things and briefly tell them what you have accomplished.
4. Create a backup planYou still have R2! Figure out what went wrong, select a few schools that will help you reach your goals and start learning about them. R2 is still a few weeks away and do not be shy to put in the work to make a few more applications. You have gone through the process, and I promise it is going to be a whole lot easier this time.
5. Be kind to yourselfLook, I get it. This is a really hard process. Do yourself a favor and do not let this outcome spoil your holidays. Call your parents or loved ones and meet them. Confide your situation and seek advice. Sometimes the best advice come from the most unexpected people and I promise that the people who care about you only want the best for you. But if you are still not happy, here are some solid strategies to improve your chances.
