Hi,


I am an international student, with a technical engineering background, looking to do a career shift to Tech. I received the offers below, still not decided what to do. Any tips would be appreciated!

- UNC Kenan-Flager: $35k scholarship (still under negotiation) + Dean's List nomination
- USC Marshall: $ 100k scholarship (final offer)

Pros and cons:

- UNC:
Academically, I prefer the Kenan-Flagler program, seems more mature to me and has a concentration in Tech
Low cost of living, which leverages the scholarship offer. I estimate that I will save around $ 30k in living expenses when compared to LA

- USC:
Percentage of international students is higher - which is a better thing to me
Comparing two mid-ranked schools I think being in a big center such as LA could be better for recruiting. Also, most of the Marshall alumni are in California.

Both are pretty comparable. Tech at UNC overtook Finance and Consulting as the #1 career path for grads and I know a pretty solid tech pipeline from my visits to UNC. I know they just revamped their tech curriculum and added a new tech concentration so it looks like they are really trying to solidify tech. I actually like the UNC program vs. Marshall but depends if you want to end up on west coast or east coast. If East Coast, UNC for sure.

Thank you for your answer! I am not interested in East Cost. In fact, my plan is to stay a year in the US working and then come back to my home country. I think some working experience in a big tech company would be a great add to my resume, especially if it is the Bay area.

Considering that you aren't interested in the East Coast, have more money at USC, AND want to do Tech, going to USC for the network and proximity to Tech firms seems like the correct move.

Hey fran261 ,

I agree with everyone here. Considering your goals, I would prefer to choose USC. Being closer to the valley can help you move to Tech Industry pretty easily compared to UNC. I think it's worth spending those $30k bucks. Good luck and keep us posted! :)
