5. had been unaware of the contributions of Srinivasa Rmanujan, a genius who in his short career had produced a number of theories that is breathtaking

To solve this I read the statement and nothing really stood out, so I turned to the answers. Notice 2,4, and 5 all differ from the original in their ending phrases.
#2 -had been breathtaking (past perfect progressive, wrong verb tense)
#4 -is breathtaking (singular verb, needs to be plural to match theories)
#5 -see #4 above
Now 1 and 3 are left, and they have one word different
#3 -"had produced" past perfect tense and this is used when an action is already completed before another event in the past

#1 is correct

1. are unaware of the contributions of Srinivasa Rmanujan, a genius who in his short career produced a number of theories that are breathtaking

2.are unaware of the contributions of Srinivasa Rmanujan, a genius who in his short career produced a number of theories that had been breathtaking

4. are unaware of the contributions of Srinivasa Rmanujan, a genius who in his short career produced a number of theories that is breathtaking

5. had been unaware of the contributions of Srinivasa Rmanujan, a genius who in his short career had produced a number of theories that is breathtaking

#2 - had been is wrong
#3 - had produced is un-necessary
#4 - "the number of" is singular, "a number of" is plural. This is wrong since this uses the singular "is"
#5 - had been is absurd

so, #1 is correct

I agree with 1.
#4 is not correct because "a number of theories that is breathtaking" is wrong, plural should be used here.

I choose A here, for reasons already discussed. There's nothing wrong with A.
