In option B, what if there was "such as" instead of "like"??
would it be correct?
First, our usual disclaimer: your job is to select the BEST choice out of the five available options, not to look at a single sentence in a bubble and decide whether it's correct or incorrect. So analyzing a tweaked answer in isolation isn't a very realistic or useful task.
That said, changing "like" to "such as" in (B) certainly helps. Notice that in (A) we get a nice parallel list of singular nouns with articles ("
the hydraulic dredge or
a 20-foot-long implement"). (B) would probably be a bit better if it had something like that, or perhaps two plural nouns for consistency ("hydraulic dredge
s or 20-foot-long implements").
Also, "by using" seems to suggest that the clammers are only able to work year-round because of those instruments. Does that imply that it would be
impossible to work year-round without those instruments? It's open to interpretation. (A) avoids that issue by simply telling us that they work year-round and that they use those instruments.
Obviously the "like" vs "such as" is the biggest difference between (A) and (B). These other points are worth noting, but probably not enough to eliminate (B) on their own.
Luckily, the GMAT isn't asking us to make that call. If you understand why (A) is better than (B) as written, then you've done your job!
