(A)Unlike elite runners, whose times are calculated from the starter's pistol to the finish line,
(B)Besides elite runners, whose times are calculated from the starter's pistol to the finish line,

(D)Unless the runner is elite, in which case the time is calculated from the starter's pistol to the finish line,
(E)With the exception being elite runners, whose times are calculated from the starter's pistol to the finish line,

This one is a case of absolute phrase.
Runners and marathon times cannot be compared, D correctly uses an indipendent clause instead of a modifier.

Correct answer: D

3)By the second week of the department store's "Going Out of Business" sale, there was only a little shirts and not much other clothing left on the racks.

(A)was only a little shirts and not much other clothing
(B)were only a few shirts and not many other clothing
(C)were only a few shirts and not much other clothing
(D)was only a little shirt and other clothing
(E)were only a few shirts and other clothings

countable "shirts" and uncountable "clothing", only C has the correct options: few (countable) shirts and not much (uncountable) clothing.

Correct answer: C

4)While most graduate students find that their education has prepared them well for their future careers, some express concern over their education lacking real-world application, having, for example, been given homework that is unrepresentative of realistic scenarios or having been assigned to group projects that do not adequately consider the skills of the individual participants.

(A)having, for example, been given homework that is unrepresentative of realistic scenarios or having been
(B)having, for example, homework that is unrepresentative of realistic scenarios or being
B is parallel but "being" is awkward, and the meaning is slightly different from A
(C)as, for example, having too unrealistic a scenario in their homework, or being
C incorrectly joins the participial phrase to the main clause
(D)when they have, for example, been given unrealistic scenarios in their homework, or were
Not parallel
(E)for example, when they have homework that is unrepresentative of realistic scenarios, or been
Not parallel

Correct answer: A

5)Growing out of a need for affordable housing during the Great Depression, the first student housing cooperatives were structured as not-for-profit organizations, whose members made small payments toward their room and board, then taking turns performing household duties, such as meal preparation and property maintenance.

(A)board, then taking turns performing
(B)board, and then taking turns performing
(C)board and then took turns performing
(D)board and then took turns, they performed
(E)board and then took turns and performed

These members paid small payments and then took turns performing chores, we should put those actions in parallel: out A B.
While the verb tenses themselves don’t really have a problem in choice E, the fact that it treats “took turns” and “performed duties” as separate events is illogical. Choice D commits essentially the same error. Accordingly, C is correct.

Correct answer: C

Can you please help understand why D wouldn't be a run on sentence since it has two IC (the runner is.., marathon times are) separated without FANBOYS?

Not sure whether Unless is playing role similar to Although.

I researched and learned that unless is a valid subordinator.

Just for reference to others courtesy of MGMAT SC guide. Few of the subordinators are Although, Because, Unless, Before, After, Since, When, If, That, Though, While..

"Unless the runner is elite, " this is not an IC. It has no meaning taken on its own.

Moreover all the other options incorrectly compare elite runners to "marathon times".

A and B cleary use wrong comparison ( Runners Vs times)
C and E also use the same wrong comparison,
D , though slightly wordy, avoids this comparison and merely describes the method used for maraton time calculation. This makes sense to me.

We need plural verb here as the subject is X and y . D is gone. Not much can't be used as clothes are countable. A and C are gone. Between B and E, B has proper parallel construction. few shirts and not many other clothing. B wins.

(A)board, then taking turns performing
the "comma" is not required as their are only two items in the list
(B)board, and then taking turns performing
the "comma" is not required as their are only two items in the list
(C)board and then took turns performing
Correct
(D)board and then took turns, they performed
the comma before they is not required
(E)board and then took turns and performed
took turns and performed being in the same tense give the same importance to two things

Guys it is clearly D, no need for all the fuzz, its basically a comparison question and two things being compared but be logical and parallel. Hence we need to compare times, every other combo is out

Cheers!

Is it C?

I think 'many' can be used here, only if 'clothing items' are used.
Anyway, I'm new to GMAT prep & I think I must get myself a Grammar book

Oh! I thought that one could use 'much' here as the sentence states 'clothing', not 'clothing items'.

1. In A, B and E it seems like the comparison between times and runners - out.
2. In C I want to mention that it sounds like it can not be an elite runner in marathon. But really we speak only about marathon.

3. D is good.
