I believe the answer should be C.
A and B are definitely wrong because "acid smoke" is being compared to pipe tobacco.
In D and E, the intended meaning of the sentence is distorted. The "age old methods" are used to cure pipe tobacco, not the "alkaline smoke".
C doesn't have any error.So answer should be C.

C makes comparison correctly and is unambiguous.
sentence meaning: pipe tobacco is cured by ageold methods and yeilds alkaline smoke. Unlike cigarettes tobacco,which yields acidic smoke.

Official Explanation :

Choices A  and  B  illogically compare the acid smoke of cigarettes with pipe tobacco, not with the smoke from pipe tobacco.

Choice B  is also faulty for making the curing methods rather than the nature of the smoke the basis of comparison.

Choice C  is best, for it compares cigarette tobacco with pipe tobacco in terms of the type of smoke each produces.

Choices D  and  E  garble the intended meaning by saying that the smoke of pipe tobacco is cured by age-old methods. Moreover, the phrasing is less compact and idiomatic than Unlike is for expressing a contrast.
