Hello Shark76, thanks for sharing your details. Some thoughts and clarifications:

1. Your GMAT score, GPA and undergrad pedigree sound good. For M7 schools like Columbia, Booth, and Wharton, a 20+ point improvement in GMAT score can strengthen your chances.

2. Your professional background is interesting given the 5+ years' experience in real-estate financing. Were there promotions in your role? While formal leadership roles aren't mandatory, it'd be important to showcase leadership traits, in addition to the transferable skills to your post MBA goals.

3. Transitioning to IB is challenging (for anyone) given the fierce competition, but since you have a financing background (in Canada), it may help your case. Having said that, make sure to research the career paths, which firms hire, for which roles etc. so your profile can be positioned well both while recruiting and in the MBA applications.

4. You haven't mentioned extracurricular activities. Have you been involved in any?

  • Demographics: Asian female, immigrant to Canada
  • Age at Matriculation: 29
  • Education:
    • BCom from UBC (Finance major, Math minor)
    • GPA: 3.75 / 4.33 (Canadian scale)
  • GMAT Focus Edition: 675 (Equivalent to 730 traditional)
Work Experience (5.5 years by matriculation):
  • Industry-leading financial services firm (Canada)
  • Specialized in commercial real estate financing
  • Led end-to-end execution of deals (over 50 client groups, total deal size > $500M)
  • Significant client engagement and internal process improvement experience
  • Limited formal team management
Why MBA:
  • Pivot into investment banking with a focus on real estate
  • Long-term goal: transition into a management/leadership role in real estate finance
Target Schools:
  • Wharton, Booth, Columbia, Yale SOM, Hass, Cornell
Questions:
  1. How competitive am I across these M7 schools?
  2. Is my GMAT Focus 675 a red flag for my target schools?
  3. Any advice on how to best frame my leadership experience, given the limited people management?
  4. Should I consider retaking GMAT Focus to target 700+?

Would love your insights on chances, scholarship possibilities, and any other program recommendations I should consider.

Here are some thoughts on your profile:

First, some positives:

- You're an Asian female in finance, which adds gender diversity to a traditionally male-dominated field.

- You’re in commercial real estate finance — a niche within financial services that isn't saturated in MBA applicant pools.

- You’ve executed large-scale deals with client exposure, which gives your resume real weight.

If you can tie your work into a broader strategic lens (e.g., how these deals impact communities, firms, or the CRE market), you’ll show that you’re thinking like a future leader, not just a transaction executor.

Is your GMAT score a Red flag? Absolutely not. But it's not a strength either for M7. However, since I also do a lot of GMAT tutoring, I know how difficult it can be to bump this up by 20-30 points (which doesn't sound all that much by itself). It would most likely detract you from crafting great essays and recs, so stick with 675 and invest in the rest of your app.

Your Leadership experience - AdComs know that many applicants don't have formal direct reports, especially in finance. What matters is showing:
Ownership: Did you lead a client relationship? Own the end-to-end structuring of a deal?
Influence: Did you steer internal stakeholders, juniors, or cross-functional teams?
Initiative: Did you improve a process or system? Introduce something new?

Frame your leadership in terms of initiative, decision-making, and impact — not hierarchy. Highlight situations where you’ve influenced without authority.

Scholarships - With a 675 GMAT Focus, you’ll be on the edge for merit scholarships at M7 — especially Wharton and Columbia, which are more GMAT-sensitive. Booth is a bit more holistic, and Cornell and Yale could be very realistic scholarship targets given your strong GPA and differentiated work experience. If scholarship is important, consider applying to schools like Ross, Fuqua, Darden, and UCLA Anderson. With your profile, a 675 GMAT would be very competitive at these programs and could earn you strong merit awards.

If I were you, I would focus now on crafting a story that connects your commercial real estate experience with long-term leadership ambitions. Use the LoRs to highlight how you lead without formal authority — this can round out your profile beautifully.

Feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions.

Hi Shark76
Priyanka here from ARINGO. Speaking about your profile, I see a strong foundation in real estate finance and a well-thought-out plan. Your work experience leading over $500M in deals at a top firm, paired with a solid academic record, makes you a competitive candidate.

The 675 FE isn’t a deal breaker. No doubt, an increase in the GMAT score would further strengthen your chances, but your current score is decent and not a red flag. If you wish to apply with your current score, just make sure that all other aspects of your profile are strong.

While not having formal team leadership might seem like a gap, if you’ve led key initiatives, worked cross-functionally, or influenced senior stakeholders, that still counts as leadership, just make sure to tell that story clearly to the adcoms.

If you think you can increase your score significantly, then go for a retake. But honestly, if everything else in your app is strong, it’s not a deal-breaker. Can you highlight one or two specific deals where your work made a real difference?

I’d be happy to offer you a free profile review for top MBA programs to see where you stand and how to boost your chances— Happy to help!

Hi

Thanks for sharing such a detailed profile. You have a lot going for you, and with the right strategy, you can absolutely be competitive at top programs.

Strengths first:

Your academic record is strong, especially with a finance-math combination from UBC and a solid GPA on the Canadian scale.

The work experience in commercial real estate finance, including $500M+ in deals and client-facing execution, is impressive and clearly outcome-driven.

As an Asian female immigrant to Canada working in financial services, you bring an international and cross-cultural element to your profile that can add to classroom diversity.

That said, a few areas need attention:

The GMAT Focus 675, while a good score, sits at the lower end for schools like Wharton and Booth, especially given your professional background. If you feel you can push it above 700 in the Focus format, it is worth a retake. Many candidates in your applicant pool will be in that range, and every point can matter.

The limited formal leadership is not uncommon in financial roles, but you will need to frame leadership as influence and initiative rather than direct people management. Highlight client ownership, cross-functional collaboration, and any mentorship, training, or internal initiatives.

Your story of pivoting to investment banking with a long-term vision in real estate finance is coherent and connects well with your background. Just ensure your essays clearly explain why now, why MBA, and why these specific schools, tying it all to your future goals.

Recommendations will also be key. Choose recommenders who can speak to your leadership traits, ownership mindset, and long-term potential beyond your technical contributions.

You can certainly be competitive at your target schools, especially if you can improve your GMAT slightly. Also consider including schools like Stern and Anderson, which are strong in finance and offer good real estate exposure.

Happy to help if you need a second opinion on school selection, essays, or overall positioning.
