US Student Visa Application Process Step by Step with Screenshots

If you are an international student, this 46-page PDF instruction manual with screenshots will be really helpful to apply for a US Visa once you have your I-20. The PDF was shared among admits though the original author is most likely a part of the Kellogg 2023 admit cohort. Sharing it here with full credit. This will be helpful for a few more years!

Table of Contents:

    1) Payment of SEVIS Fee I-901 (Can be done later, But follow the order) ……………………..(2)
    2) Filling of Online DS-160 Visa application ……………………………………..(3)
    3) Payment of Visa fee ………………………………………..(29)
    4) Booking Visa slots ………………………………………………(39)
    5) Documents to be carried for Visa interview ………………………………………….(45)
    Note: As per new process, while filling your DS-160 you cannot upload your photo. You will get a display message “Photo will be taken at the ASC” over your photo section in confirmation page. So don’t get confused by checking old tutorials/posts/videos online.

Thanks BB for the great post. Well i currently hold B1/B2 visa, do i still need to follow this process or is there any alternative path that i need to follow. I saw couple of videos on youtube, but all of them assumes that i'm already in usa, and applying for change of status. So, i'm kinda confused in terms of what needs to be done, as i'm in my home country.

I have an option of applying for an F2 Visa with my Spouse who is applying for an F1 Visa ( Admitted to Wharton). I also have a chance to get into a great Univ as I am waitlisted at 2(Booth, Stern) and my decisions will be announced by around mid-end May.

Should I apply for F2 Visa now and convert it later into F1 or wait to get clarity on admissions and directly go for an F1 visa next month? I'm concerned that if I wait for May end, could it be too a bit too rushed and risky to leave only about 1.5 months for my visa process ( Considering an improbably but possible rejection related delay too)
