Hi Gurus,
I have read the usage of that by Rajat Sadana on the below post.

I was reading the NY times this morning and have found this statement and I have a doubt on the usage of that in her.
Globally, renewable energy sources are growing fast but they still account for about only 10 percent of total energy supply, with most of that coming from hydroelectric power, according to a new report from the research firm Sanford C. Bernstein & Company.
Given the below usage listed :- it qualifies for usage 1.
Usage 1 – THAT acts as subject of the clause
Usage 2 – THAT acts as the connector between two clauses
I am guessing - that refers to renewable energy in the preceding clause : but as per the rule that modifies the preceding noun in the clause. So I am just confused : what is that referring to actually? and how can I surely identifiy similar pattern.
Please can anyone explain this.

The usage in the source is incorrect. It should be "it". Don't worry, you haven't got it wrong, they have.
What they want it to refer to is the "10% of total energy supply", if you are still curious.
