Is the usage of verb "expanding mass never DREW" also incorrect in option A?

Since it is the 2nd form and 3rd form is preferred in past tense.

I think this is a high-quality question and I don't agree with the explanation. This is a great, very challenging question and its answer should be depeer elaborated.
