I don’t quite agree with the solution. Although B is the best answer, a whole in it is that we are not provided the timeline that the petition/ movement took start to finish and maybe, months wasn't enough and people already heard of what was brewing.

Hi himnem, and sorry about the delay in replying.

That's a good point. However, note that the Weaken question does not have to be absolutely covering every situation, it just needs to weaken the argument.

Here is where you are spot on: in a real-world historical situation, causality is rarely so clear-cut, and a bill being drafted "months before" doesn't prove the petition had no influence. Public sentiment or prior discussions could have already been "brewing" and influencing the cabinet.

However, for a GMAT "weaken" question, we need to pick the answer choice that most undermines the author's specific claim as presented in the passage. This does not have to destroy the argument, just weaken it. The author uses the New Zealand example to illustrate how the nationwide petition "forced Parliament's hand."

Option B challenges this stated causal link. If the cabinet had already drafted the bill, it suggests that the initiative was already underway from the top-down, rather than being solely or primarily "forced" by the bottom-up petition. While not an absolute disproof, it introduces the strongest alternative explanation to the author's direct assertion of bottom-up agency in that specific case, making it the most effective weakening answer among the choices provided.

The GMAT often tests your ability to identify the strongest logical attack on the argument as it is constructed in the passage, even if real-world history is more complex.

I don’t quite agree with the solution. Although option B weakens the example that was given in the passage ,There is still no clear exaplanation on as to how it directly affects the basic argument that the author makes about he grassroots movement

I don’t quite agree with the solution. Even though option B undermines NZ case, it is one of the cases sighted as illustrations.
I feel A is more centrally to the argument as the research is sighted as a main fact. Undermining this would have a greater impact on the argument as a whole

I don’t quite agree with the solution. i feel that the second option talks about only one case that supports the bottom up approach while the other might be true. So it might weaken to some extent. i feel casting doubt on the authors analysis saying that he chose biased data to prove his approach (option 1 ) would be a better option.

Option A was eliminated for the reason that even though the quantitative study took a wrong dataset, the two case studies are intact.

Can't we say similar reason to eliminate option B as well? That even though one case mentioned in the passage may not be correct, the quantitative survey and one of the case study are still intact.

Hi. This is a most-seriously weaken question, so multiple choices can weaken and you have to pick the one that weakens the most.

The reason A) is eliminated is that it is not a major enough weakener. It sort of casts some doubt on the study, but it does not really do much damage with the whole autocratic argument, since it is talking about democratic regimes anyway.

B) has a completely different approach by basically destroying one of the examples provided.

I hope this helps.

I don’t quite agree with the solution. The solution does not make much sense – the passage is about 'outcomes' and drafting a bill is nowhere near as big an outcome

I did not quite understand the solution. Option E. If elites supported the ordinary people than doesn't it weaken the bottom-up approach.
