Hi. I am looking at your second question and I have to compliment your unique mind and way of thinking.
I would also say that you are probably working harder than you need to and GMAT is somewhat simple with its inferences and conclusions and purpose questions.

1. Your argument that the passage has already established - that's the whole point! Had it not been for the passage, it would not have established so even if the passage decisively determines and concludes something, it's purpose can still be to "identify" or "determine" or "evaluate" even if it argues or concludes something.

2. In case of B, this is a narrow scope answer choice. Look at the second paragraph - it does not fit into the passage if that were the purpose. Why does the passage talk about benefits of exercise if all we want to talk about is difficulties in measuring the exercise and diet impact on weight loss? B is a much narrower scope than the passage is and is a fairly typical incorrect answer. One will usually be too narrow and one too broad.

"However, the question remains: does exercise alone significantly contribute to weight loss and long-term weight maintenance?"

while this sentence in the passage would suggest option E, but I eliminated E based on the fact that the passage has already establsihed that excercise is a significant contributor, the primary purpose of the passage seems to evaluate whether excercise 'alone' works or there are other contributors to weight loss etc.

I felt a close second option would be option B due to this line from the passage

"It is important to recognize the challenge of monitoring dietary intake and exercise intensity and duration over the long term. Overreporting of actual exercise and underreporting of food intake by individuals could be a contributing factor to the mixed results found to date."

could you help me clarify this ? bb

Thank You!

Hi, Thanks, I made the same mistake and chose B. Your explanation clarify a lot.

though I would like some light on the use of words "Explore, Evaluate, Discuss, Analyze, Trace,Argue, Demonstrate, highlight " in primary purpose questions, if you can.

Also adding link to another question which I faced similiar problem in Gmat club test.

Thanks
