Bacterial damage in most wheat-growing regions in Serbia have caused a major increase in the price of wheat in the Serbian market. On the other hand, the price of rice has remained stable for a long time. Wheat plants are known to grow and mature more quickly than rice. This has led to many Serbian rice farmers decide to grow wheat instead, and take advantage of the high prices in the Serbian agro-market and increase their income, at least in the next few years.

Which of the following, if true, most seriously weakens the plan's chances for success?

A. The cost of farming rice has increased significantly over the last few years and analysts claim that it will only go up in the coming years.
B. In the last few years, the demand for wheat or wheat products has not risen sharply.
C. A new pesticide company is testing a new product that is inexpensive and effective to combat the bacterial damage in wheat plantations.
D. Only a few consumers would be willing to pay a significantly more amount for wheat and wheat products than they are currently paying.
E. The trait of the bacteria that seem to have attached the wheat farms in Serbia has no effect on the rice plantations.

Official Solution:

Argument: Farmers who are currently growing rice should take advantage of the increase in wheat prices and start to grow wheat.

A. The cost of farming rice has increased significantly over the last few years and analysts claim that it will only go up in the coming years. - Opposite

B. In the last few years, the demand for wheat or wheat products has not risen sharply. - No need for the demand to increase sharply. Even the normal demand would suffice and the farmers growing wheat can make more money.

C. A new pesticide company is testing a new product that is inexpensive and effective to combat the bacterial damage in wheat plantations. - Correct.

D. Only a few consumers would be willing to pay a significantly more amount for wheat and wheat products than they are currently paying. - If these few consumers are willing to pay that much more, then the wheat farmers would be happy to sell their produce to these few consumers.

E. The trait of the bacteria that seem to have attached the wheat farms in Serbia has no effect on the rice plantations. - Out of focus. Focus is on growing wheat to make more money.

I think this is a high-quality question and the explanation isn't clear enough, please elaborate. The company is in the process of testing doesnot mean it will give the intended result then how can we take it for granted?

for C),

It does not say anything on when this new product will be on the market though

I think it is a poor quality question because it doesn't clearly reason out the right thing.
In B) - Fine that the demand is even normal then many farmers who are growing wheat can make more profit.

C) A new pesticide company is testing a new product that is inexpensive and effective to combat the bacterial damage in wheat plantations. - How the author will be sure that the product will be successful in real implementation? When the product will be launched if the testing will be successful? It generally takes time for market to react even if this is considered. Why farmers will adopt this new pesticide? What if people there prefer organic foods (wheat). Not clear at all.

D) I think whoever made this question didn't focus on important words.
"Only a few consumers would be willing to pay a significantly more amount for wheat and wheat products than they are currently paying."
ONLY A FEW consumers would be willing to pay a significantly more amount for wheat and wheat products. If this is the case then passage states that "This has led to many Serbian rice farmers decide to grow wheat instead, and take advantage of the high prices in the Serbian agro-market and increase their income" please note the word MANY farmers are going to do that now reasoning is if only few consumers is ready to buy a product and on top of that increased in competition then how these farmers are able to sell the product in high price. The farmers will not be able to make money at all and all efforts will go in vain.
