Thank you ScottTargetTestPrep and EMPOWERgmatRichC. I really appreciate it.

I am addressing the points below:

My official mock scores:

GMAT Prep 3: 720 (Q48, V41) - October first week
GMAT Prep 4: 720 (Q49, V40) - October mid
GMAT Prep 5: 720 (Q48, V42) - October last week
GMAT Prep 6: 740 (Q49, V42) - November first week

I took MGMAT CATs as well and my score always hovered over 650-700. I tried to replicate exam conditions, but I admit that there were a few seemingly insignificant liberties I took such as pausing the exam and using the bathroom. It just happened in two of the MGMAT CATs that I took in August and I tried to limit myself thereafter. But could this have such a huge impact?

Another major problem I face was of time management. I have always practiced in the backdrop of exam-like time constraints, but there was a lot of mismanagement that happened on both the sections on the exam day. I am thinking now how to discipline myself all over again.

I have been studying for over a year and I easily spend an average of 35 hours a week studying. For Quant, I had help from a personal tutor and I referred to TTP extensively as a precursor to my personal tutoring. All this helped me to get to a 48 from a 32 on Quant.

For Verbal, I referred to MGMAT, GMAT Ninja's videos, and E-GMAT. As I worked through my drills, my results were pretty solid. I never slipped below 80% on SC and CR. RC was sometimes a challenge for me, but that improved so much over the course of my preparation. Personally, I have always tried to find a balance between the meaning and grammar nitty gritty. I think this worked wonders for me, as I could crack just any SC problem.

But on the exam, I just couldn't make sense of the first SC problem that I saw on the test. I couldn't focus as much. Also, I have devised a strategy for each type of question I see on the verbal section. I would never just jump into the problem while doing my drills. But nothing worked on the game day as I sat in front of that computer.

I am planning to apply to a few schools, including Kellogg, NUS, and INSEAD (still deciding on a couple other schools). To even think about these ambitious giants, I need a 700+ under my sleeve, and there is only so much time left for R2.

I ordered for my ESR as soon as I exited the exam centre. I should get it in about two days. I am planning to appear online from the comfort of my room. Probably that will work to my advantage. I don't have a date in mind, but some day towards November end itself makes sense given the situation I am in.

Please feel free to ask any more questions you may have.

Thank you!

Hi,

I appeared for an exam at the centre today and scored a 630 (Q48 V28). I am familiar with the centre I appeared at. I sat for an exam last year at the same centre.

Just to give a brief, I have always scored in the range of 40-42 (official mocks) and 38-40 (MGMAT CATs) on the verbal section of the exam. As I am now trying to reflect on what could have gone wrong, I just can't put a finger on anything that could bought my score down by 10-12 points. I slept really well, and in fact, on two days leading up to the game day, I watched food shows and cooked food. I was pretty relaxed and happy about how confident I felt.

I have to appear for the exam in next 15-20 days, as I am targeting R2. Truth be told, I need a 720 at least and that's the score I prepared for - I tried to maximize my score on Verbal because that's my strength (or at least that's what I thought). I was hoping I'd see a 38 on the verbal on a bad day, and I could take it to a 40-42 on a good day. My scores on the official mocks ranged from 720 to 740.

I have ordered for my ESR, and that would probably take up to 3 days. But I am so mad at how everything turned out that I can't wait to dive back in and get some confidence back. I haven't had a lot of issues with this section because I majored in English literature and then worked as a journalist. To sum it up, I have never been out of the read-and-write game.

But one thing that does occur to me is that I couldn't understand things that appeared on screen as well. This didn't happen on the Quant section though. I was reading and re-reading stuff, including passages, arguments, and even SC answer choices. After the lockdown was announced, I got very much used to doing everything related to GMAT in the comfort of my room. I rarely ever sat in the living room because I was always either working or studying. I did feel a bit uneasy to sit in that chair and stare at a completely new device. I think this could have troubled me, but the same should also have happened on the Quant section.

I am maybe overanalyzing. Should I consider appearing for the GMAT online? Please feel free to pass on some suggestions.

Thank you, appreciate it!

Hey Rocknrolla21,

First of all, sorry to hear about how things went with your GMAT. Do not get disappointed. There's always a way out. An improvement is definitely possible if you understand what went wrong and work on improving it.

Firstly, the scores in your mocks are good. Having said that, did you use the right technique to solve verbal questions? Or did you get lucky with a few and somehow got the right answer? Answer to this will help me guide you in a better way. The thing is Verbal questions on GMAT are very tricky and you need to have a strong conceptual understanding and need to use the right strategies to solve questions. If not, there are high chances that you will get stuck between two close answer choices.

And as you have ordered your ESR, even that should help us narrow down a few things. You can always write back to me here or a better way would be to discuss it over a zoom conference call. That way, it would be easy for us to analyze the ESR as well. So, if you wish to connect, you can use the below link to schedule one.
