Hi vkm,

I'm sorry to hear that Test Day didn't go as well as planned. When these types of score drops occur, the two likely "causes" involve either something that was unrealistic during practice or something that was surprising (or not accounted for) on Test Day.

On Test Day:
1) How long was the ride to the Test Center from your home?
2) Were there any distractions at the facility or during the Test?
3) What did you do during the two 8-minute breaks?
4) Did you finish any sections early?
5) Did you have to rush to finish any sections (and guess on questions just to finish on time)?

It's possible that you just had a "bad day"; but if we can figure all of this out quickly, then you won't necessarily have to wait too long to retest.

GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,

Hi Rich,

Thank you for the feedback. I certainly agree that there is something that went amiss, but as much as i am frustrated i would like to know the reasons so that i can improve before the retest.

1) How long was the ride to the Test Center from your home?
=> It was about 10 minutes walk.

2) Were there any distractions at the facility or during the Test?
=> Apart from the typing of keyboards which i wasn't mentally prepared for, there were no particular disturbances. The test center was more warm than usual during the test. I think it is also the calmness i am used to rather the noise of the keyboards in the test center.

3) What did you do during the two 8-minute breaks?
=> I relaxed and ate the snacks which i brought with me.

4) Did you finish any sections early?
=> No.

5) Did you have to rush to finish any sections (and guess on questions just to finish on time)?
=> Quant was a bit of rush for the last 5 questions otherwise verbal i finished on time.

I believe with a new gmatprep pack test i would be able to know if any of the above reasons did play a role in my performance in verbal section.
If the test scores are within the range i used to score then i will go ahead and schedule the exam.

Dear VKM,

Sometimes “life happens” and we are not able to get the desired results. You should not think about the last attempt and approach the next one with a positive mindset.

Current Situation

I would like to be very frank with you. Your current verbal score V20 (22 percentile) indicates that you need help in all three verbal sections. This is quite evident from your ESR as well. If you are aiming to score 700 or more, you'll need at least a V35 (assuming you can get a Q51). Ideally you should aim for a V38 at least.

Accuracy at this point is not a good judge of your ability as you may not have faced very many difficult questions in your mocks because of your overall low percentile. Furthermore, please note that it is not possible to improve your score if you just improve in one or two sections. To understand more about Ability, visit this link: https://e-gmat.com/blogs/what-are-ability-quizzes/.

How can you improve

Preparing for GMAT is a very scientific process and we make sure that you are follow a methodical and strategic approach for the same.

You can only succeed on the GMAT when you have the right combination of concepts and application. A student should know how to apply the learned concepts properly to get a good score. In the actual GMAT exam, tricks and shortcuts tend to fail and only students with a proper approach to questions succeed. This is what we do at e-GMAT. We teach our students a foolproof process to solve questions and make them follow the same. This is the reason for our high rate of success.

Have a look at some of the links below to understand

1. Learn how Nikhil, currently a student at ISB Hyderabad, improved from V19 (19 percentile) to V38 (85 percentile). In the interview (https://goo.gl/UqfcbW), Nikhil articulates his struggles, outlining what worked for him and how was he able to finally improve to V38.
2. Richa improved from 12 percentile (V16) to 85 percentile (V38) on GMAT Verbal improved her overall score from 470 to 720. Read Richa's debrief: https://goo.gl/8Gu2oS.
3. Suren improved from 470 (V17) to 740 (V40). Read Suren's debrief: https://goo.gl/K2gUgU.

What to do next?

We get a number of people who are in your shoes. What you are trying to accomplish is very doable and has been accomplished by numerous non-natives. I recommend that you look at our Verbal Live Prep course: https://e-gmat.com/courses/verbal_prep/.

Verbal Live Prep is the world's most comprehensive classroom course. The course is designed to instill a discipline in students that helps them work more efficiently towards their target score. The course helps you at every step, starting from defining your GMAT strategy (through our strategy sessions) to learning all the concepts (through our Verbal Online component of the course) and corresponding application (through the live sessions) and culminating at sessions that help you put your best foot forward as you take the exam (through Scholaranium and tactical strategy sessions).

In addition, Verbal Live Prep is the world's only course to provide a 4-point Verbal Score Improvement Guarantee (https://goo.gl/D6UKRl) and it is GMAT Club’s most reviewed Live course (https://gmatclub.com/reviews/e-gmat/e-gm ... -345345624).

You need ~120 hours to complete this course. Most people are able to complete it in less than 40 days. You can view the complete batch schedule here: https://goo.gl/op0as0.

Since you plan to take the GMAT again in January, you’ll have ample time to complete the course. Note that you also get recordings to all Live Sessions, which are 99% as effective as the live sessions themselves. Thus, you actually prepare for GMAT at your own schedule regardless of any session timings.

Also, this time when you prepare I would suggest you to not mix different mocks since you don’t understand whether you are improving or not. You should try to attempt all mocks from a single source only (Veritas, MGMAT, etc.).
