Clubbers,
Took the GMAT the past week, and I would say here are my top 5 tips for the real deal. Just as an aside, took GMAT prep 1 practice for 690, GMAT prep 2 for 650, and real GMAT clocked in at 670.
5. Took the test at 12pm, and because they start you off at different times, when I was doing the Verbal section, a new person came in right next to me and started typing furiously on the essay topics. Even though they give you headsets, it does not block out everything. Keep that in mind if you are affected by noise.
4. Take the 8 minute breaks, but make sure you ask the administrator for updates because you will have no watch on you and possibly no wall clock. Every second you go over, it is taken off the next section. Also, I would recommend only doing 7 minutes because when I got back, the administrator has to log you back into the test, and she somehow got her password wrong two times in a row which cost you time.
3. If you finish early on the essays, take that extra time to relax and do not move forward yet. Once you move forward and submit you only get 8 minutes until the quant section.
2. Eat enough before the test so you do not lose focus. It will take about four hours for the whole thing, and the Verbal as the second section really needs your full focus, especially when you hit the mid-mark in the Verbal section.
1. I took the test on Monday because I heard you do not want to go into the test on Friday exhausted from work Mon-Thur. I absolutely agree that Monday is the optimal day if you get the weekends off. Just relax on Sat and Sun and go in blazing on Monday. I did 10 problems on Sat, which took about 20 mins, and 5 problems on Sun, which took 10 minutes. Then I did nothing, went to sleep early on Sunday, and did my thing on Monday.
Hope this gives some perspective on the actual test day.
