MbaConfucius
Hey guys,
So I took the GRE this past December and scored 166/170 Q (96%), 166/170 V (93%), and 4.0/6.0 AW (54% -.-); this score is equal to a 740 GMAT according to this GRE-GMAT comparison tool :https://www.ets.org/s/gre/flash/bschool/comparison/17302/170/index.html
I have some questions:
1) Should I take the GMAT if I want to apply to top 20 b-schools? I know most of them accept GRE scores, but how are they really viewed (please be brutally honest!)
2) Is the GMAT harder? I would have around 2 months to prepare for it, if I decide to retake it. Will a 720+ score be reasonable with this amount of time? I plan to study 4 hours a day and 8 hours each weekend day.
3) Not really related but bear with me: Can I put my GRE score on my resume when applying to jobs? Right now I am working in sales but would like to transition into finance to give myself a better show at b-school. Is this weird/insane/stupid?
Thanks in advance!
Dear
MbaConfucius,
I'm happy to respond.
My sense is that, since you already blew the doors off the GRE, that should be sufficient. Basically, b-school adcom is trying to answer one question when it looks at GMAT score: "Can this student handle the work here academically?" Your GRE score already gives a resounding "YES" to that question. I think it would take a tremendous amount of work to prepare for the GMAT (because you would want a comparably elite score on that too), and it's not clear whether there really would be any meaningful gain. A very poor effort-to-outcome ratio. I would say: stick with your GRE, and do whatever you can in every other part of your application to make sure you stand out. That's my advice.
The GMAT is not necessarily harder, but different. It may be that for some people, the difference makes one much harder than the other, but for most folks, I would say the are both challenging, but in somewhat different directions.
I would say: go ahead --- slap that GRE score right on your resume. A resume, after all, is a very formalized way of bragging and saying "
look how great I am", and an elite GRE score, like a a degree from an elite college, simply turns heads and commands some instant respect. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that!
I hope all this helps.
