Am I ready to give GMAT?

Question

Hi All

I have given several GMAT practice tests and I am a little confused as the scores have varied significantly between different practice test providers. All the tests have been completed within last 1 month. I am including the average score below. Also, I got similar scores in all the tests by the same provider:

1. Veritas (5 tests) - Quant (51), Verbal (34) - Score 690
2. GMAT Prep (2 tests) - Quant (50), Verbal (34) - Score 700
3. LBS Free Test - Quant (50-53), Verbal (38-40) - Score 710-730
4. Manhattan (3 tests)- Quant (46), Verbal (33) - Score 660

My target score is 710 or above, based on the college I want to join. My average %ile in Verbal is mostly in the range of 70-75% in most tests, except LBS (85-90). I have found Manhattan Quant tougher than Quant in every other tests. My average %ile in Quant is >90%, except in Manhattan where they were 60-75%.

Which test simulation is more closer to actual GMAT? How much shall I expect in actual GMAT? Also, even with 51 Quant score, is 70-75% in Verbal enough to pass the cut-off in top 10 colleges worldwide?

I have prepared on my own through Manhattan GMAT materials and the official GMAT review. I can solve most Verbal problems correct when time is not an issue. At this point, I am not sure what I can do to further improve my score.

Hey HEMUBC , Welcome to GMATClub

I would prefer you to prepare a bit more and try to hit +30 points of your target score on GMAT Preps. You need to understand that the moment you will enter the exam room, your anxiety or exam pressure may lead to some decrease in the scores. So, looking at your current scores, I am expecting there is less possibility of hitting a 710. Moreover, for the top 10 schools, I would prefer to hit closer to mid 700s. All the best

Hi HEMUBC ,

GMAC has publicly stated that the Official Score that you earn on Test Day is within +/- 30 points of actual ability. Assuming a similar 'swing' in how your CATs function, your various CAT score results show that you essentially performed the same each time (about 700 +/- a few points).

It's important to remember that taking lots of CATs will NOT make you a better Test Taker. A CAT is really a 'measuring device' - when used correctly, it will give you a realistic score and help define your strengths and weaknesses, but it will NOT help you to fix any of those weaknesses. To raise your scores, you have to put in the necessary practice and repetitions. The CAT will show you whether your studies are helping you to improve or not. As such, you really shouldn't take more than 1 FULL CAT per week. Over the Course of 1 month, it would be reasonable to take 4-5 CATs; you took 11 CATs though - and there's a reason why those scores are all so similar - you have not put in the proper time and effort to hone your Quant and Verbal skills to score higher.

About 2 weeks ago, GMAC made a formal announcement defining some changes that will be taking place to the format of the Official GMAT (beginning April 16, 2018). These changes primarily impact the overall length of the Exam (meaning the number of questions in the Quant and Verbal sections as well as the amount of time that you’ll have to complete each of those two sections). In theory, a shorter Exam could make it easier for a well-prepared Test Taker to score higher. Unfortunately, Official practice CATs in the new 'format' don't exist yet - but once they become available, you should plan to take one (so that we can get a better sense of how you perform under these new conditions). I strongly recommend that you spend at least another 2 weeks focusing on your study BEFORE you take your next CAT though.

I'd like to focus on the 2 Official GMAC CATs that you took - and I'm hoping that you can answer a few questions about those 2 CATs:

When you took those CATs:
1) Did you take the ENTIRE CAT each time (including the Essay and IR sections)?
2) Did you take them at home?
3) Did you take them at the same time of day as when you plan to take your Official GMAT?
4) Did you ever do ANYTHING during your CATs that you couldn't do on Test Day (pause the CAT, skip sections, take longer breaks, etc.)? 
5) Did you ever take a CAT more than once? Had you seen any of the questions BEFORE (re: on a prior CAT, in an online forum or in a practice set)?
