Hi Guys,
I am preparing for the GMAT at the moment and I am looking for some advice on how to improve to reach my needed score.
So I started preparing at the beginning of October and scored in my first Mock test a 510 (Q31, V29). I am also doing an internship right now so I have a 40-hour workweek. That's why I studied mostly in the morning before work for about one and a half hour and one hour after work. Additionally, I did Anki flashcards while on the half-hour bus ride to work. On the weekend I studied for about 4 hours per day.
As materials, I used the OG and the Manhattan book series.
Today I took the free mock test of the MGmat Cats and got a 580 (38Q, 31V). I need at least 640 for my master's degree better 650+ what I feel like is possible even though analytical thinking doesn't seem to be my strength. I plan to take the test on the 24th of February so I still have time to improve. Of course, I hoped for a bigger improvement in score but that I almost didn't improve in verbal surprises me.
I tried to analyze as good as possible what my weaknesses are. In Quant for example about one-third of the questions are due to too careless mistakes, for example, me miscalculating something, another third are questions where I simply was missing knowledge especially. Here I am going to study the correspondent chapters in the Manhattan guide again and look for more practice questions online. For the last third, I did know the content which was needed but I simply didn't recognize that I had to use it here. The best I can think of in this situation is to do more practice questions from the OG and get familiar with the possible ways the GMAT can ask the content.
Concerning verbal I need some advice. In the last mock exam, RC was my best with 7 out of 12 questions right. Then follows SC with 7 out of 14 and CR with 4 out of 10. I approach RC problems by reading the passage and briefly writing down what is where so I can later go back to reread what the question asks about and answer it. In SC I try to find a mistake that I am sure of in the first sentence and cross out all sentences that have the same error. Then I continue with the next error until I only got 2-3 answer choices. Idioms and Parallelism are the areas where I struggle most. Probably because I am not a native English speaker as you probably already have noticed. Regarding Idioms, they seem to be endless and I frequently encounter idioms that I have never heard before and that sound absolutely wrong to me which is why I tend to cross them out what leaves me with even worse options so that none of the answer options make any sence to me. Another problem I have with SC is that all the issues in isolation as they are taught in the Manhattan books are no big problem to me but as soon as they come all together I miss things I actually know. To address this problem is it wise to just do more SC problems in the OG?

First off, 650+ is very much achievable given the amount of time you have on your plate. In my opinion, the biggest improvement that you can expect is through Quant as you stand at <50 percentile in Quant now. V31 is a decent score but ofcourse you got to improve it as well. I scored 660 with Q49, V31.
I would advice you to opt for some Quant course such as TTP which will cement your basics really well with the number of practice questions in each category after each concept they teach.
Secondly, read Manhattan SCs as many times as you can to cement your SC concepts.
Third, give one of the official mocks to judge your current standing. Manhattan mocks are really tough especially Quant which are not reflective of real GMAT questions.
Finally, prepare a plan attacking each of your weaknesses you have mentioned.
With all this, you should be on course for a much better score. All the best!!

Hi FROMBERG,
It's good that you are aware of your weak areas and are looking to work on them. But the solution of practicing questions is not right. When there are weak areas, the ideal solution is to understand what's going wrong and then work on them. In your case, I see that you are not using the right methodology to solve questions. Let me elaborate it to you.
Working on your weak areas:
RC seems to be fine. But coming to SC, you don't just eliminate answer choices by finding the errors. You have to first understand the intended meaning of the original sentence, identify errors if any, and then eliminate answer choices which are either grammatically incorrect or which do not convey the intended meaning. You might have often come across answer choices which are grammatically correct and convey a logical meaning but are indeed incorrect. So, it's always better to approach SC questions from meaning stand-point.
CR seems to be the area in which you are struggling the most. I suggest you to follow a structured process to solve CR questions. There is a certain sequence you have to follow when you solve CR questions.
- Read the argument
- Identify the premises and the conclusion (Helps you identify the scope of the argument)
- Read the question stem (Understand what it is asking)
- Identify the missing link (The framework will help you do this process with ease)
- Eliminate answer choices which are not in-line with the missing link you have come up with
As you see, there is a certain framework on which most CR questions are based. If you learn the framework and the pre-thinker's guidelines, then you will be able to solve CR questions in a more structured way.
The path ahead:
I suggest you to choose a right resource which can help you nullify the gaps you have and learn the right methods to solve questions. OG is a good source for GMAT like questions but I'm afraid it doesn't help you much with the strategies. You can check out the verbal course of GMATWhiz. There is an elaborate course on SC and CR, which you will definitely find helpful. As you have just a couple of months to prepare, I suggest you not to take any chance.
