GMAC really pulled a fast one on test-takers by allowing them to purchase / register for GMAT Classic exams that GMAC never intended to administer: specifically, any exams scheduled in February and March 2024.

There are now only 113 days remaining for the GMAT Classic!

Heard more on this …. Like what?
They have updated their website, canceled peoples appointments, and sent out emails. I think the Messages is fairly clear… that’s the date… if this is not enough, check their Instagram - I think it is even there 😱

We are trying to figure that out. We need someone with an appointment already booked to see if they can book another appointment. We need to see if the system would allow them to book multiple appointments….

definitely seems so. And we gave a hard time to Wharton… but I wonder why they waited until October 10 to make this announcement?

Why not make it back in the summer or wait until December 31 and surprise us all? 😬

Will all schools start accepting the focus edition then? I recall earlier this year that not all schools would accept it.

I don't think this question really needed to be asked but it has been asked so many times that I feel to address the issue, I should address it.

Imagine 2 scenarios:
Scenario 1: not all schools accept GMAT Focus after Jan 31, 2024. What should test-takers do on Feb 1? Try to take a test that has been decommissioned?
Scenario 2: schools who took GMAT will take GMAT focus because Scenario 1 is not really viable.

The only 2 MBA programs that had policy for GMAT Focus were HBS which said it will accept GMAT Focus next year and Wharton which has been more confusing than a drunk sailor.

These are the only two schools I’ve ever heard mention any kind of limitations on accepting the GMAT focus edition.

Hi Kitkattime135,

As bb mentioned, it seems only Harvard and Wharton aren't accepting the Focus Edition for R1 and R2 this cycle. That said, you could always reach out to your target schools and confirm.

The updated GMAT™ Focus Edition will replace the previous version of the GMAT™ Exam on January 31, 2024. This means:

  • GMAT Exam appointment availability – at both test centers and online – will not be available after January 31, 2024.
  • Starting February 1, 2024, the only version of the GMAT available for you to take will be the GMAT Focus Edition.

More information can be found at GMAT Exam FAQs

Your last chance to take the previous GMAT Exam is fast approaching!
With eight weeks of prep recommended to achieve a top score, your time to take the GMAT Exam is running out. Register today while appointments are available.

Guys, I want to take the classic version by end of Jan 2024 and look to target R1 applications in 2024. Is that a good option?

Hi Debaditya123,

You could do that, but be ready to take the Focus Edition as well, in case you need or want to take the GMAT again.

Thanks Ajitesh for your reply!

Also at the cost of sounding silly as I’m still new into the GMAT landscape, I have another question to you or anyone🙂:
During the test centre exam, do we get to see anywhere under which round of application our score will be sent to the 5 desired schools we picked? I mean say if I take the test in Jan, will it automatically be sent to the r2/r3 application bracket or I will be explicitly asked to pick my desired round (let’s say r1 of next cycle)?

Hi Debaditya123,

1. Keep in mind that your GMAT appointment date needs to be before the deadline(s).
2. You don't need to tell GMAC when you plan to apply to your target schools.
3. In most cases, schools will receive your official scores within 24 hours (this is after your scores become official).
4. After (3), the schools you chose to receive your score report will be able to access your score for as long as it is valid.

Hi Guys,

Would love to have your opinion on whether it is better to switch to EA or GRE, than GMAT Focus, for someone who has been preparing for the classic edition, in case one doesnt hit their target score by the deadline?

I ask, as I wonder if they utilize the same skillsets (not sure if they have SC and Geomtry?), vs. Focus, which while utilizes similar skillsets, has some major changes. This is assuming that the target schools do accept these tests as well.

Personally I like focus for 3 reasons:

1. You get a lot more prep tests and resources with focus than GRE and EA combined. You can get 12 official practice tests. They don’t overlap with Classic GMAT prep. You get zilch with EA.

2. You get a pretty straightforward scoring system. EA and GRE sort of have it too.

3. You get the most extensive score report after focus for free that tells you which questions you got wrong (same as gmat prep score report). So if your test does not go as planned you can figure out why exactly… more or less.
