Scholarship negotiation on new GMAT score?

Hi Guys,

What is your take on negotiating (Read:requesting) more $$ into an admitted school by getting a higher GMAT score after your admit?

For instance, say school A has given some $ but after the admit you give GMAT again and improve say 20-30 points, is it possible to renegotiate the scholarship after that with the school?

lol, I think this depends on the school, and how much you improve.

I don't think a 20-30 pt increase will be worth trying this. they will most likely tell you no.

I agree. I think that while for most schools GMAT is an important part of the application and once you get past their threshold (which you have in being accepted) marginal increases don't really matter for admission, let alone for scholarships.

A 20 to 30 point increase is pretty small and frankly is within the margin of error of a test (it could be the result of guessing right a on a few multiple choice questions). That, coupled with the fact that scholarships are rarely if every awarded based solely on GMAT score (although it may be part of the equation), I'm not sure a small increase would increase your award.

While asking likely won't hurt, it will likely waist both your and the Adcom's time. I'm also wondering why you took the GMAT after being admitted, unless you were applying to other programs. Frankly having Admits in hand at other schools (especially with $$$) is better leverage for negotiation.

Basically no downside to simply asking. I say go for it, but temper your expectations.

I agree. For the top schools, an increase of 50 points might not make much of a difference. If you think you'd have to get lucky to get a 50 point increase, I'd say don't bother. Do speak with the admissions & fin. aid team first. I'm sure they'd be happy for you to take another crack at the test, but wouldn't be able to comment on your chances of increased scholarship until after you submit your new score.

Like has been mentioned, it definitely couldn't hurt to ask. But the more realistic bargaining chip are offers from other MBA programs.
