Hey guys, wanted your opinion on whether it's okay for me to list "Senior Analyst" as my title when my company's directory lists me as "Senior Business Analyst". The only reason I would want to shorten the title to "Senior Analyst" is because the name of my department has the word "Business" in it (e.g., my title would be "Senior Business Analyst, Business Strategic Planning"; sounds worse than "Senior Analyst, Business Strategic Planning").
Any thoughts? If it doesn't matter, I'm going with "Senior Analyst". If there's any risk involved, I'm going with "Senior Business Analyst".

From what I've read about position titles I don't think it matters. With titles I think there's a few things to really consider.
Your main concern should lie with prestige - what exactly does your title mean at your company? If it is a little known company the admissions officer may or may not know how senior you are and will go by years of work experience. Obviously if you're coming from an Investment Bank (Analyst, Associate, VP, ED, MD) or a big consulting company the admissions officers will know where you're at based on your title.
In your case I would consider Senior Business Analyst or Senior Analyst in a Business Division to be the same since regardless of your position you're performing business functions in a senior analyst role. Good luck with your application!

Short answer is it doesn't matter - all about preference. The only time it would matter is when folks try to tie their title more closely with their job responsibilities but HR has an entirely different thing on the books. When that happens, that's a discrepancy and so that's a flag during the validation process. Yours is all about preference so go with whatever you think sounds better.
