Hi,
I plan to apply to Kellogg which has an average GPA at 3.68. I was an international student and has a undergrad GPA of 3.5/4.0. I have certifications like CFA and a GMAT score much higher than average to prove my academic readiness. Should I try to address this slightly lower GPA in my optional essay section?
Hi
ychen135,
A 3.5 GPA — especially from an international system — is not low enough to be a concern for Kellogg, particularly when paired with a well-above-average GMAT and a rigorous credential like the CFA. Together, those already demonstrate strong academic readiness and quantitative capability.
Kellogg generally expects the optional essay to be used only when something needs explanation (major dips, gaps, extenuating circumstances). A GPA of 3.5 does not fall into that category, and drawing attention to it could be counterproductive.
Unless there was a specific semester with a clear, legitimate reason for a drop, it’s usually better not to address it. Your CFA and GMAT already do the work of strengthening your academic profile.
