How does this year look, compared to the last few years? Obviously 2009 broke records in number of applicants. Any interesting trends?

i sat through a mba consultant info session and the lady told us that the number of applications is expected to be high (but not as high as what was seen in 2009).
she also said that (depending on the school obviously) that most schools saw an increase in rd2 applications.... (i.e., rd1 becoming SLIGHTLY less competitive) in 2010. No sure how that'll play out for the 2011 application year.
take this news w/ a grain of salt... you shouldn't be steered into thinking that your chances are now better for rd1 (since these statistics may fluctuate widely every year). just apply when you are ready.

Don't put too much faith in these presentations. Although these presentations can offer useful info, they can't predict the volume of applications any better than you can.
The only factual data out there that can forecast app volume is the data on how many people have taken GMAT in recent months, but people take GMAT for various reasons, not just for MBA. Just because more people take GMAT, it doesn't necessarily mean there's more competitive applicants this year compared to the last.
So stay calm and just do your best. A great application package will get you interviews (and admits) no matter how many people are applying to bschool in any given yr.
