Hi there,

I am a female entertainment industry professional decided to pursue an MBA but after 6 weeks of full time studying my GMat score is nowhere near 700s. The highest I scored in cats is 600 and much to my surprise I got a 570 yesterday on my cat. The more I study the less I score? I can`t fully analyze what I am doing wrong but when I first started this I was aiming for top schools. So before I go ahead and apply to HBS or Columbia I wanted to get some opinions about my profile. I am naturally having second thoughts about even applying to those schools with such low scores.

Here is the deal:
- My test is on November 28th. I have finished manhattan Gmats strategy guides and solved everything on Gmat Official Guides and I will spend the rest of my days practicing questions on MGMAT.
- I took a break from professional life to fully prepare to GMat but I can`t afford a longer period of time off.
- My best bet is applying in January since I am an international candidate. Thus I need to take the test within 2 months. Since you need to wait 30 days before you take a second exam, I can only take it again on December 29th. Couple days before the deadlines.
- I am from a small city in Turkey, moved to Istanbul for college, studied communications in community college, started working in the entertainment industry, got involved in many international events, toured with famous people, decided I want to do concert venue management, then went to UCLA to get a certificate in Music Business, worked in LA couple years, came back to Turkey, start running the largest open air concert venue for 2 years, then work in some art projects and major festivals. I worked with world known projects such as Cirque du Soleil and many top artists.
- No private schools, no family money.
- My college GPA is 2.9, I started working when I was in my 3rd year for many reasons that I won`t explain in detail now. My UCLA Certificate in Music Business Program GPA is 3.95.
- I want to work in live entertainment business, which is becoming more and more corporate and I need an MBA degree to engage my field experience with corporate business.
- I have 9 years of work experience.
I will kindly ask for some sort of profile evaluation and thoughts on pursuing a top school with this profile score combination. Or any advice on increasing my score, but honestly I don`t know what I can do different in the 2 weeks I have left.

Thank you!

Hey there Frankie,
So I can understand your conundrum.. The first thing is to think about what is possible, what is realistic and what your options are. Right now it is a bit hard to say where you can get in, because I have neither enough information about you, your work experience, nor your GMAT. But it is true that if you get less than a 670 Top 10, even Top 20 schools are going to be more or less extremely difficult to get into. And of course December will not be enough time for you to prepare your application if you decided to retake, so that's not such a fantastic option for you right now. Your real options are to a) think about delaying until next year, and see how you can fill the gap with work somehow or b) compromise on your school choice... I know it's not exactly what you want to hear, but it's probably better to prepare yourself so that you can come up with a new game plan. What are your thoughts?

Hey Jon,
Thank you very much for taking the time to reply. I think you are right about calibering my expectations.

There are various reasons I can`t wait until next year. That is pretty much my one shot. I know I can do better on Gmat if I could spare more time to improve my stamina and pace. Eventually I get the questions right, but with the language barrier and going back to high school math material after 13 years is making it hard to catch up. But I don`t have that time.
I don`t want to give up on top schools all together, I believe my profile is interesting for many schools but I guess what I can do is to balance the number of top schools I apply and add some "easier to get into" schools on my list.
What do you think?

Well in that case I'd say for now, do the best you can on the GMAT... The pressure is on for sure! And once you get your score, then you can figure out where you want to apply. Since this is a one shot, and you won't apply next year, then compromise is really the only thing that makes sense. I mean you can try to get into top 10 schools, but it just won't fly. They have enough applicants with a 720 a 3.5 who graduated from Ivy leagues to not need anyone with less unless they think that you will (really) change the world. This doesn't mean that you have to give up on your dreams, but given the limitations of time and the realities of your GMAT and GPA, that you should think about other schools...

But anyhow, let's not worry about school strategy till you get your GMAT score. It's always easier to strategize with the facts.

So good luck on your test, and drop me a line when you get your score and we can take things from there.

To flip this, do you need an MBA to work successfully in the live entertainment business. For example, would USC Marshall suffice given its Los Angeles location and its specialization on entertainment (https://classic.marshall.usc.edu/ecg/con ... rogram.htm).

To concur with Jon, I think you first need to find out your score and then determine where to apply. Feel free to email me at [email protected] once you do.

Best of luck,

Best of luck,

That's ALSO a very good question. Especially since a lot of the jobs out there are mostly connections/friends/talent.. and you could check out other music/film Masters if you find something else that fits your needs.
