If this is the wrong forum for this type of question, I apologize in advance! I came across this site in my somewhat aimless online search.
I am exploring the MBA degree, in addition to MPH, MHA (MA/S in healthcare administration), MA/S in management/leadership, MOD/L (MA/S in organizational development/leadership), MA/S in industrial-organizational psychology.
Why? I will try to keep this to the basics. I have no background in business, and want to move into either a healthcare consulting role, or a leadership/management position in the healthcare insurance industry.
Basic info:
I'm 29, F, a registered nurse (RN)
Caucasian and 1/4 hispanic (my father's parents were 1st gen. immigrants, neither of my parents have BA/S degrees, none of my grandparents ever went to college)
Education-
A.S. in Nursing from local community college in 2007 (GPA 3.8/4)
B.A. in Psychology from Boston U in 2009 (GPA 3.8/4)
Work Exp-
Since 2007 (7 yrs), have worked in multiple roles in mental health nursing, including staff nurse at multiple hospitals, including a leadership position in community mental health and working closely with some accomplished MD's as a case manager at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Scores- Obviously never taken the GMAT. I scored well on the SAT (1410, back when it was out of 2000--780 verbal out of 800, 630 math)- was accepted to Wesleyan University in CT out of high school but only did 1 year there due to having to take a medical leave (GPA was 3.35 when I left-- A's in science classes, C's in music theory and dance electives..)
Extracurriculars- Now, I work >40hrs some weeks, so nothing formal. Member of Mass Nurse's Association (union). In college- member of a mental illness awareness group and a public health group, and worked all through college (both degrees). Also, at BU I briefly volunteered in a developmental biology lab and then for about a year in a clinical psychology lab- BU Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders
Publications- In 2009 I first-authored a meta-analytic study on anxiety and pain that was published in a clinical psychology journal
Goal- as stated above
I am wondering if:
1) someone with my background/exp even has a chance of getting into a "worthwhile" MBA program, or, since my background is fairly unique, if it matters as much which school I go to
2) If MBA would make more sense with my goals vs one of the other degree programs mentioned
3) If you guys could point me towards any additional resources for more info on MBA curriculum, lifestyle, etc.
Regarding #2-- It seems like the MHA might limit one to only being hired in healthcare, if I wanted to to move to another industry. I know MPH's can be more business-focused, but since I have no business background whatsoever, I was thinking an MBA might make me more competitive.
The last 3 degrees I mentioned (leadership/management, organizational development/leadership, I-O psychology) appeal because in truth, I am less interested in the "hard" business sciences/classes such as finance, accounting, and economics. I am interested in organizational effectiveness, quality and process improvement, as well as the people side of business. I also feel that the latter 2 degrees could build off my background in psychology and that my background would make me more marketable in those roles and doing management consulting-- I am very good at reading people.
I am also an introvert (INTP in Myers-Briggs) and networking is not my strong point, so wondering if I'd be a total fish out of water in an MBA program, although obviously, networking to some degree is essential in every field, and I do what I have to do.
Thoughts/suggestions?
