Hi there,
I'm a 24 year old Canadian Male with a BFA from York University (Major Music, Minor Business). I graduated with a 3.0 GPA (better in my music classes than business...I've got a couple good marks in ECON and Management Policy, but really struggles with Stats and Accounting). I had hoped to get a "good" GMAT, and hopefully luck my way into a half decent program...turns out I got a "great" mark.
Overall: 760
AWA: 6.0 IR: 8 V: 47 Q: 48
Despite my weak grades in quant related classes, I have generally good quant skills. My low GPA can generally be attributed to poor planning on my part (aka...deciding on the business minor in my last year, putting approximately 4 years of music in between my grade 12 calc and the next math related course I ever took). I was identified as "academically gifted" from an early age, and grew up as a member of the "Program for Academic and Creative Enrichment" program (PACE). After my undergrad I completed a few project management courses from the University of Waterloo, and passed my CAPM exam.
I have approximately 10 years of formal professional training in classical piano and jazz guitar, as well as 4 years of professional training in the tenor saxophone.
My real passion is music, but I realized (rather late in the game) that no one was going to pay me for my "passable" musical chops.
I've also recently completely my ASL level 1 training with an aim to complete level 2 by the time I begin this MBA adventure.
My work experience includes 1 year "full time" as an Operations Senior Representative at Best Buy Canada (I also sat on the Viewpoint committee for employee satisfaction and involvement), and 1.5 years in supply chain at a mid sized Toronto IT reseller/Solutions provider. I've been the recipient of 1 promotion, and won a fairly prestigious competition (the prize being a lunch with our VP of Operations, a call out in our company-wide monthly recap, and a few hundred dollars), which involved planning, designing, and implementing a new logo/mantra for the operations team. With a budget of $3000 we created the logo/mantra, implemented a social media plan, and printed high quality sweaters for the entire 150 member operations team based out of the Toronto office. I was also the only member of the purchasing team selected to take part in our company's six sigma project management training (training is set to commence in July).
It's been advised that schools like UCLA/NYU would be good starting points if I were to want to do something in music/media/arts, but I'm also looking a little closer to home. Schulich offers a combined MBA/MA (music) program (although I don't think my GPA would allow me entrance into the MA portion), as well as an option to work towards a graduate diploma in media arts while getting my MBA. Ryerson University (TRSM) also offers an MBA-IT with a specialization in Media Management.
Since submitting my score report, I've been contacted by TRSM, and they have advised if I choose to apply to their MBA program I would likely be a recipient of one of their top awards, which basically would amount to a free ride + a few thousand in spending cash.
Now...I know that TRSM isn't anywhere near the other schools I've mentioned in terms of reputation, but being in the heart of downtown Toronto, and having teams that win seemingly every Canadian MBA competition that I've read about...it seems like a good atmosphere (along with a great financial opportunity...the program would only be about 15 months as well).
My hope is that you can tell me what my chances are at more prestigious program like the ones at Schulich/NYU/UCLA, and whether I would be competitive enough to warrant some $$ [as the American schools are definitely out of the question if I don't get some serious moolah].
I know that's a pretty detailed profile/question, and I totally understand if the response is "well go buy our admissions consulting package", but any response is a welcome one!
