Hi Paul..
Thanks for the reply..Sorry about being so brief in my previous post..
Though my job title says just 'Process Engineer', I'm a team lead at my job working for a Fortune 100 company..I have 4 associate engineers working under me..I've been a team lead for the last year and a half..I'd be in that position till a promotion or the start of my MBA (Fall 2008)..I've been earmarked for a promotion (managerial position - Project Manager) within the next few months, where I could be having about 15-20 people under my leadership.
I have led groups (Group size distribution: from 3 to 12) for lots of backpacking/hiking/daypacking trips..In fact, I've had an experience of single-handedly saving a drowning group member during one of the trips (It goes without saying that it wasn't the most pleasant of the trips, though we have a good laugh about it now!)
I've also been a supervisor in my lab during my MS & PhD programs, with new grad students and undergraduate students reporting to me and I have mentored them successfully.
I've captained my Ultimate Frisbee team to an Intramural championship during my Masters (a feat that was achieved for the first time in about 8 tries!)..I was also the captain of my high school cricket, quiz & debate teams, for which we won quite a few honors..(Do my high school activities matter for a B-School application?)
I know the following would not show my leadership quality..but it would most definitely show my commitment...In the time period after my Masters and before getting into my PhD, I managed to pay off my student loans & credit card bills (low 5 figures) by working as a part time employee (floor sales) in an electronic store (day job: 1/2 PM-9/10 PM), where I got an award for the 'Best new employee' and as a overnight stocker in a huge departmental store (night job: 10.30 PM-6.30 AM) with just about 5-6 hours of sleep most of the nights (should I say mornings?) for more than 6 months...Both the employers did not want to let go of me..I was promised promotions and raises at both places if I decided to stay..But PhD beckoned!!
Well...coming to the 'goals' part of your reply..I want to move up the management chain in my company..So, I'm thinking about a B-School with strong general management program or even industrial management..
Can you now kindly evaluate my chances at top US business schools such as, HSB, Wharton, Kellogg, Chicago, Stanford, MIT, Tuck, NYU etc. based on the above information and also my first post?
Do you still consider me a long shot at Chicago, Kellogg & Tuck and want me to lower my sights from HSB, Wharton, MIT, Stanford, NYU, etc?
Thank you for your time...Looking forward to your reply
