I will be applying to full time MBA programs in Rd 2 this year. I am looking for any and all advice to round out my list of schools. Thoughts on my profile would also be welcome.
DemographicsWhite male, 27, U.S. citizen
EducationUndergrad: Wake Forest University
Major: BS in Mathematical Business (this is a single major split between the business school and math department)
GPA: 3.65 GPA (study abroad grades are not factored into my GPA but are included on my transcript - they are subpar)
GMAT: 780 (49Q/51V/8 IR/6 AWA)
Other: I completed all 3 CFA exams directly out of undergrad, but do not have the charter due to work experience (see below)
Work Experience5 years experience total (6 at matriculation)
Nearly 2 years with a large asset manager/financial services company in a corporate finance role. Strong brand name
but not an investing role (heavy accounting with some FP&A).
<1 year with a startup middle market investment bank as an analyst. Focused mostly on equity and debt private placements. The company ended up being a bit of a chop shop, and I did not get any meaningful deal experience, but my performance was strong. I left shortly before the firm went under - the CEO was in hot water for some deals that were completed prior to my joining the firm. No brand recognition (at least I hope).
1.5 years with a regional middle market investment bank primarily focused on M&A. I spent a year as an analyst and then was promoted to Associate, approximately 1 year ahead of a typical promotion schedule. Performance was strong and I gained solid deal experience.
1 year (2 at matriculation) at a lower middle market PE firm as an Associate. Very strong deal experience and performance. The firm is small but has sent Associates to some very strong business schools recently, including HBS, Wharton, Booth, and Columbia. I plan to request recommendations from my direct boss (a Principal) and a Partner at the firm, and expect both to be quite strong.
ECs and Community ServiceThis area is severely lacking:
Undergrad -
Rugby - 4-year starter for the club rugby team; president and captain my senior year (40+ players and 2 coaches; Div I program; fall and spring seasons); this was a huge time commitment
Fraternity - my involvement was primarily social, although I took part in several fundraising events
Beta Gamma Sigma business honors society - almost zero involvement
Real Life-
Board of Trustees member for a foundation that supports scholarships for rugby players - I do some marketing (newsletters) during the season on behalf of the foundation
Team captain for a large personal finance education event for high schoolers in a nearby city - time commitment is 1 day/year with some logistical work leading up to the event
Career GoalsEither move up in middle market PE or move into a finance/strategy role with a PE-backed company (preferably consumer products or industrial). I would also consider a CFO role with a smaller family owned business expecting to transact within 5 years.
GeographyCurrently in the northeast (not NYC) and moderate preference to stay here. Would be open to Midwest or certain areas of the West Coast as well.
SchoolsI would like to apply to 4 schools (max of 5). I am in year 2 of a 2-year program at my current firm and will be running job searches in parallel to my business school applications. If I do not get into any schools, I will not be heartbroken. If I do get into one or more schools, I may still elect to forego business school if an attractive job opportunity presents itself.
Will Apply: HBS, Sloan
Considering: Wharton, Booth, Kellogg, Tuck, others suggestions?
Thanks in advance.
