Hello! I am a future MBA applicant planning to apply in R1 2024 for matriculation in fall 2025. My partner and I have a plan to leave our jobs around December 2024 once I have gotten some admission decisions and travel until the summer before settling down in a new city and prepping for B-school while she finds a new job, given I am accepted somewhere R1.
I am wondering if this gap (6-8 months) will have an impact on my resume/job prospects later - I will have had 4YoE in a consulting and data analytics role and stayed at one job with a few promotions and publications. I am curious how it will be viewed future employers, and if it would be viewed differently if I were doing some sort of work/experience (we have considered teaching English in a foreign country for some of the time) versus just backpacking/traveling for pleasure.
As far as goals/industry post-MBA, I work in healthcare consulting/data analytics now and want to transition to tech or more senior managerial roles in healthcare/biotech, no interest in IB/minimal interest in MBB which I know can be whole different beasts than industry!

brp616, good to see you're planning ahead. A 6-month gap would likely not be too much of a concern, particularly for your target roles. Generally, PE/ IB and consulting firms tend to be more strict when it comes to CV gaps etc. Besides, traveling around the world (after you have an admit) can give good exposure to other cultures, which can be seen positively by B-schools and companies.
FWIW, you could also consider pre-MBA internships or part-time projects (we've seen people do these remotely as well) in areas in-line with your career goals (e.g. advising a start-up). This can help explain the gap, while adding valuable experience.

The key will be to position the gap in a positive light - emphasize how it allowed you to gain new skills, experiences, and perspectives that will benefit you in your future MBA program and career. As long as you can articulate a clear rationale for the break, it should not significantly hinder your prospects. The strength of your overall background and fit for the target roles will be the more important factors.
