In option A when they say ...., amounting to 80,000 dont they mean that 80,000 is the total cost as a result of the 10% increase , option B seems to indicate that there is an increase by 80,000 which is 10% o the total ..pls clarify

As I see it, it doesn’t matter so much whether the increase is $80000 or the total cost is $80000. The issue here is the comparison of some amount vis-a -vis a totally different entity such as a Study, except in B. That should be enough to arrive at the destination at the quickest.

The Correct Answer is B.

A) Wrong comparison average cost of a study……………..as compared with similar research…….. Correct Usage is Cost of x compared with Cost of y

B) Correct Choice. average cost of a study…..would increase more than10% …...….from that(cost) of similar studies.

C) The same error mentioned in Choice A repeats here. Also in construction increase of 10%...above y, above is redundant.
Correct construction is increase of 10%......in y

D) Modification Error. Compared to similar studies this year should immediately followed by the phrase being compared i.e. by study performed by laboratory………

E) Incorrect for the same reason cited in Choice D.

Regards,

Abhijit.

IMO - C
Please provide the OA. Hope my logic is sound!

(A) The researchers explained that the average cost of a study performed by the laboratory would increase more than 10 percent, amounting to about $80,000, as compared with similar research and analysis this year. - "increase more than 10 percent" awkward!
(B) The researchers explained that the average cost of research and analysis performed by the laboratory would increase more than 10 percent, or about $80,000, from that of similar studies this year. - "increase more than 10 percent" awkward!
(C) The researchers explained that there would be an increase of about 10 percent in a study's average cost, or about $80,000, above this year's similar research and analysis. - Correct
(D) Compared to similar studies this year, the researchers explained that the average cost of research and analysis performed by the laboratory would increase about $80,000, by more than 10 percent. - Incorrectly comparing studies with researchers
(E) Contrasted with similar research and analysis this year, the researchers explained that the average cost of a study performed by the laboratory would increase more than $80,000, or about 10 percent. - Incorrectly contrasting research and analysis with researchers

Thanks everyone for your feedback.
So, Here's what I understand.
a) "average cost of study" compared to "similar research and analysis this year"
b) "average cost of research and analysis" compared to "from that of similar studies this year
c) "study's average cost" compared to "above this year's similar research and analysis"
d) "Compared to similar studies this year," followed by "the researchers" - Illogical modification
e) "Contrasted with similar research and analysis this year," followed by "the researchers" - Illogical modification

(A) The researchers explained that the average cost of a study performed by the laboratory would increase more than 10 percent, amounting to about $80,000, as compared with similar research and analysis this year. --> 'as compared with' is wrong idiom
(B) The researchers explained that the average cost of research and analysis performed by the laboratory would increase more than 10 percent, or about $80,000, from that of similar studies this year --> 'the average cost..would increase..from that of..studies..year' - correct idiom and placement
(C) The researchers explained that there would be an increase of about 10 percent in a study's average cost, or about $80,000, above this year's similar research and analysis --> wrong meaning, initial sentence says more than 10%
(D) Compared to similar studies this year, the researchers explained that the average cost of research and analysis performed by the laboratory would increase about $80,000, by more than 10 percent. --> what similar studies? Hanging phrase
(E) Contrasted with similar research and analysis this year, the researchers explained that the average cost of a study performed by the laboratory would increase more than $80,000, or about 10 percent --> about 10% is wrong information

My answer is (B).

(A) The researchers explained that the average cost of a study performed by the laboratory would increase more than 10 percent, amounting to about $80,000, as compared with similar research and analysis this year.
=> Do not use ''more than'' together with ''compared with''

(B) The researchers explained that the average cost of research and analysis performed by the laboratory would increase more than 10 percent, or about $80,000, from that of similar studies this year.
=> No flaw, keep for awhile

(C) The researchers explained that there would be an increase of about 10 percent in a study's average cost, or about $80,000, above this year's similar research and analysis.
=> The sentence is comparing a study's average cost to "this year's similar research''. It should be compare cost to cost

(D) Compared to similar studies this year, the researchers explained that the average cost of research and analysis performed by the laboratory would increase about $80,000, by more than 10 percent.
=> The sentence is comparing similar studies vs. the researchers

(E) Contrasted with similar research and analysis this year, the researchers explained that the average cost of a study performed by the laboratory would increase more than $80,000, or about 10 percent.
=> Same as D

I don't see a problem with adding the preposition 'by', but do note that the correct answer doesn't have to be perfect, only the best of the lot.
