A. Run-on sentence: Automobiles are becoming..... exhaust systems and they are the systems.....emmissions are two independent clauses and hence cannot be separated only by a coma; either a semicolon or a coma with conjunction is required.

B. Correct. A nice example of an absolute phrase.

C. The adverb as can be used to compare two clauses, but cannot be used to compare two nouns. Removing the verb are makes the comparison problematic; the comparison is now between two nouns Automobiles and exhaust systems and hence as cannot be used in this case.

D. Redundancy: and also. A verb is missing for the subject exhaust systems. Run-on sentence: they are systems....

E. Redundancy: and also. A verb is missing for the subject exhaust systems.

why can not we say , which filter the carbon emissions. instead of the absolute phrase.

Of course we can.... there is no answer choice in the question with this construction though.

in c, "as exhaust systems" is correct. but because we have "system filtering" , we need a clause to which this phrase i attached. c do not offer a clause. B dose so. B wins
