Meaning : Here the direction of earth and other plants spin is determined by collisions with giant celestial bodies.
Here the subject is the direction and the verb has to be singular then from options we can narrow down to D and E.
D) Determined by is the correct idiom.
E) was determined as a result is wrong..

Here are my views--
Direction is singular so we have to use 'was' thus A & B are out.
Between C,D & E, 'spin' is the right form as the subject is plural (Earth and other planets).Eliminate C
E is too long,awkward and wordy and GMAT loves precision.
Hence 'D'
Please correct me if I am wrong.
