(B) if the director would have known what he was doing, the play would have run (Need past perfect tense in the "If Clause")
(C) if the director had known what he was doing, they would run (Usage of would have is correct)
(D) had the director known what he was doing, they would run (Same as C)
(E) if the director knew what he was doing, they would have run (Usage of only 'would' is correct)
