Bunuel
The beginning of the show always brought in lots of money, yet the average singer ended the show
with a decrease in what their tip may be.
(A) with a decrease in what their tip may be
(B) with what was a decrease in what their tips were able to be
(C) having decreased that which their tips might be
(D) decreasing in their tips
(E) with a decrease in tips
I would go with
E by process of elimination.
(A) with a decrease in what their tip may beI am not sure what this their can refer back to since the average singer is singular. I was confused between A and E since the meaning changes in both these sentences.
(B) with what was a decrease in what their tips were able to beWith what was a is very awkward and wordy. Tips were able to be is not grammatically correct. Eliminate B.
(C) having decreased that which their tips might beNot sure what "which" is modifying. Does not convey the meaning clearly, grammatically incorrect. Eliminate C.
(D) decreasing in their tipsDecreasing in is not the correct usage. Meaning of the sentence is unclear. Eliminate D.
(E) with a decrease in tipsBetween A and E, I found this to be clearer and more concise.
IMO I would go with E, but I'm not a 100% sure. Let me know if there are any flaws in my reasoning (which I'm sure there is).
Thanks!!
