I believe the answer should be C.
A and B are definitely wrong because "acid smoke" is being compared to pipe tobacco.
In D and E, the intended meaning of the sentence is distorted. The "age old methods" are used to cure pipe tobacco, not the "alkaline smoke".
C doesn't have any error.So answer should be C.
